Ordered my 500 S&W today
« on: February 09, 2007, 02:52:32 PM »
I went by Walmart on the way home from work last night to order my 500 S&W Handi and they called their supplier and there weren't any to be had and they didn't have a time frame so I (Tim you would be proud of me) I asked if they had a 45/70 instead but they didn't have one of those either. I went home and called the local Gander Mountain and they located 4 in 4 different stores in NY for $273 including $25 shipping to my local store. While waiting to go over and pay the shipping charges I went to Gunbroker.com and found one for $254 including shipping and the FFL fee so I ordered it this morning and it should be here in a week. Just thought I would share my expierience. Charlie

You won't be disappointed; I just acquired my second 500 barrel.  Like the 45-70 it is very versatile.  You can load it from mild to wild and it always pokes a big hole all the way through.

Thanks Tim. Eskimo what are your favorite mild and wild loads? I will be buying bullets/powder soon. Charlie

In my 500 S&W I shoot the most loads with 10 grains of unique under 440 grain lead GC bullet. That load is just plain fun.  My medium load uses 15 grains of Titegroup under the same bullet and my "elephants in the yard" load load uses 40 grains of H110.  The bullet I use in all my loads is a very hard cast gas checked bullet with a 90% meplat from Ranger Rick in Alaska.  http://www.lsstuff.com/ranger-rick/
