44 mag accuracy?
« on: February 09, 2007, 03:36:31 PM »
hello all,

I remember a few months ago I read somewhere that the 44 mag Handis tended not to be very accurate due to a bore that was a little oversize. Is this still the general concensus? Or has NEF corrected the problem

I am considering buying a handi in either 44mag or 30.30.  I would really like to get the 44 but if its not going to shoot 2" 50 yd groups Ill go for a 30.30

you MAY get 2" groups from a H&R overbored .44,or you may not. I say go for the 30-30, it is a proven great performer and you will not have to worry about anything....<><.... ;)

If you're shooting factory ammo, some don't get very good accurcy. But if you handload and use max'ed out loads of H 110 they'll shoot alot better.Mine shot about 1 1/2 to 2" at 100 yds. with 300 gr. Hornady XTP's seated in the 2nd. channelure and a max load of H 110.  Digger

If you want to just shoot factory ammo , go with the 30/30 , it shoots well from all reports , now if you hand load the 44 can be made to shoot very well with the right bullet / load combo and reaming it to 445 supermag will help also .

I was kinda wondering why min shot ok. Thats all I have shot in it thus far is near max loads with 110 and 240-300g bullets. It shoots 1-1 1/2 at 50 with open sights good enough for me. One of these days Im gonna ream it to 445.

Yep that barrel gamed me almost as much grief as my teenage daughter. :D :D  I tried everything from factory loads to .432 Beartooth cast and the only thing that shot anywhere close to well was Hornady XTPs in either 180GR or 300Gr over a full load of H110.  Funny thing 240Grs were all over the place.  I sometimes wonder if the heavy loads caused the bullet to ‘flatten’ out a little and thus engaging the rifling.  This could be the reason the people who have converted to 445 SM also get better accuracy.
???  What I wanted the barrel for was to shoot light cast loads at paper, empty soda cans, etc. and it never would.  While I’m not holding my breath, I would jump at a .44barrel with a reasonable size bore and say a 1in 20 twist.  How many of you guys would go for that?
