Sizing 45 Colt brass
« on: February 10, 2007, 11:05:28 AM »
I have just full length sized some new Star and Winchester 45 Colt brass using a RCBS carbide die.  My sized brass will not slip into the chamber in my Ruger Blackhawk.  What's my problem?

If you've done just the first step they will not go into the chamber, make a finished round then they will fit just fine. Some die sets bell the mouth in step 1.  You have to make a finished round to get the true dementions.  ;)

RCBS die sets do not bell the mouth on resizing.  That is die #2 of the 3 die set.  Will the case start into the chamber?  You may not be sizing far enough down the case or the die or chamber may not be sized correctly.

With my new rcbs 45 dies, they suggest that the die should just touch the shell holder.  I was surprised by that, because I could have sworn that I (at least with rifle dies) the die should never touch the shell holder.  I have on hole that is tighter then the rest on my new blackhawk, proceeded to clean out the cylinder using steel wool wrapped around brass jag chucked in a drill.

Is this brass you have new or shot out of a different weapon?

You are correct- my bag for not reading that he was using RCBS dies!  Also I agree he probably doesn't have the die set to do the whole case length! Straight wall cases you have to go all the way down the case. ;D

I don't think that's it 454Puma - even his unsized case should at least chamber - it came out okay didn't it?  The RCBS carbide die sizes the case even smaller than the non-carbide die does - my steel .45LC RCBS die actually puts a slight bottleneck on the brass.  I wonder if he can't chamber loaded ammo - that is probably due to an over-aggressive crimp.  I just can't see how a carbide sizer would make the case larger in diameter anywhere.....

Carbide dies should be adjusted so they just miss the shell holder.

Is the die NEW?

I think that the die he's using ( if it's the resizing die) could be for a different shell, and not a 45LC!
The resizing die should bring the shell down in size enough to where you could actually drop the shell into the cylinder.

 1 ) Are you sure that the gun has a 45LC chamber and not a 45ACP ?

2 ) Have you try a finished round in the gun ?

3 ) Have you used these dies on any other brass from this gun ?

4 ) Does fired brass come out hard and will it go back into the chamber of this gun ?

Just need a little more info to help find the problem .
