Rem 7615 vs Ruger mini-14
« on: February 10, 2007, 12:26:28 PM »
Since the Rem 7400 was compared against a Saiga a few threads down I figured the Rem 7615 should get a King Kong vs Godzilla thread of it's own (ok bear with me I'm bored)

So given that they both shoot 223, both are supposedly "Ranch" models and are of roughly the same size/wt and within $100 or so in price which would you go with?

To start off with (keeping in mind I don't own either but like to get both) I would say that the mini may have slightly faster rate of fire but the 7615 wouldn't be far behind and should have the same rate of AIMED fire.  In trained hands the Rem may even have an edge.  so pretty much a draw there.

In terms of accuracy with the 7615's rotating bolt and heavier barrel it may have an edge over an out of the box mini.  possible point for REm

in terms of durability you would think a pump would outlast about any semi but the Rugers are darn rugged for a semi.  That and the LE models of the 7615 were designed for harsh use and misuse.  Possible point for rem

Availability of good mags.  Rem hands down.

Cool guy/ chicks dig it/ mall ninja appeal.  score one for Ruger

For price of a Rem, might as well get an AR.  Score one for Ruger at least you paid less for what you got.

For toys and add-ons.  score one for Ruger.

Politcal correctness. another draw possible half point for Rem since it's a pump but the anti's don't mind Reugers much either.

That's all I could come up with, anything else?

I thought of one more thing (remember I said I was bored) and that is in the area of home defense.  I think the Rem wins out.  Here's why I say that.  The Rem can be kept at the ready without a round in the chamber and then when needed it can be chambered from a firing position and with a firing sight picture maintained.  The pump gun is the only type of rifle action that can be chambered with both hands and all fingers in a firing position.  And lets not forget that the sound of a pump gun cycling has often been enough to get a bad guy to stop in his tracks without a shot being fired.

Show me an AR for $600 that you'ed trust. For that matter find new a Mini for much less than that.

The problem with the MINI is it's the best darn $300 rifle that $600 can buy. In terms of accuracy a remington pump gun will walk all over a stock mini.

Not neccacarly remember tons of the 870 goodies can be used on the 7615

As you can tell I chose the Remington.

BTW something you forgot. You cannot mount the wide variety of optics and sights on the Ruger you can on the Rem due to rugers specalized mounting system.

I was thinking the Rem was in the $750 range.  If they are $600 that levels the price playing field quite a bit.

I paid $650 for mine OTD from the local guy. I could have bought it from gunbroker.com for $600 shipped. But I did the right thing and supported a local buisness.
