The request for information was submitted under the Access to Information Act, which was put in place to make the government more transparent and accountable, and to ensure that Canadians have access to information they are entitled to in a democratic society.
At the same time, the Canada Firearms Centre is committed to protecting the security and privacy of firearm owners. When responding to requests for information about the Firearms Program, every precaution is taken not to reveal personal information that could identify firearm owners or their firearms.
In this particular case, the only information showing where firearms were located was the province and the first letter and number of the postal code. This would enable someone to identify general geographic areas where various classes of firearms could be found, but it would not allow someone to pinpoint the exact location of the firearms or identify their owners.
