want two more barrels
« on: February 11, 2007, 04:48:46 PM »
I am going to send my Handi .243 off and decided since I am going to lose it for a while, I may as well buy 2 new barrels for it. Does anyone have any opinions? I am thinking about .204, 38-55, and 45-70. I have other guns in 30-06, .45 Win Mag, 7-30 Waters, .223, 762x39, 9MM, and 10MM.

thanks for any thoughts,

mike

Lots of guys have had trouble with the 38-55.  And you will get one response on this board "everyone needs a 45-70".   I personally don't have one, but everyone seems to love them.

As for the 204.   What are you going to do with it?  I prefer the 22-250, but I might be in the minority on that.

In my opinion, everyone needs a 357 max.

i love my new 204, i am still working the bugs out of it, but it is a hoot to shoot.  a lot of guys like the 7mm08, 25 06, 30 30, and of course the 45 70 like darat said.  i think a 45 70 will be one of my next few barrels i buy.  It will look nice sitting next to my 204 and 500s&w.

The 204 is a good one...so too is the 24" bull 223...a nice 30-30 barrel would be a good one...and a 45-70...for sure...For some long range in a Handi...pick up a 280...and a 25-06...and a 24" bull 243...you'll be set..

If you do not have both a 30-30 and 45-70, get them. (You know you will want them both someday!!)

From the looks of it you are a reloader am I correct?
The 204's are awesome, and from the Handi track record seem to be among the more accurate of the Varmint calibers chambered by NEF/H&R. I don't think you can go wrong if you handload by buying a 204 as it will get rather pricey just buying factory ammo.
I too plan on a 45-70 as it's one of the big ones I am missing in my library, and everyone seems to love theirs.
Other then that you seem to have a well rounded collection of calibers.

You will not regret getting a 45-70 barrel, other than you may wish you had bought the whole gun. Don't have the .204 or 38-55 so cannot comment. As mentioned above the 30-30 is another must have for a handloader who can bring it to its full potential ... 130 gr spire points. That 30-30 has turned into one of the most accurate rifles I own.

Really you got the .30-30 covered with your 7-30waters so I would look into a .204 (better ballistics than a .22-250), A .357 Mag (just plain ole fun to shoot, And if you have alot of 9mm bullets they will work for pinking.), And of course the .45-70.

You kinda got a gap between .243 and.30-06 That .280 or 7-08 would fill just right.

If anybodys wondering  9 mm = .356
                                 .357 mag = .357

( Sorry to confuse, 9MM bullets in .38/.357 Brass, Not 9MM loaded rounds.)

When I find a great deal on 9MM bullets I'll snatch them up and use them for low pressure plinkers. 8)

Thanks for all the input.

I think I will get a .204
I have a good .223 Contender that shoots 3/8" at 100 so I don't need another .22 at this time. (the 22-250 is nice though)
Daret100 - .357 Max I would love, but it is not listed on their site, only the .357 Mag, did I miss it? I want one!
I just noticed the 50S&W while I was looking for the .357 max and that might be interesting! The modern case would not have as much empty space as the old black powder round. That might be my second.
30-30 is too close to 7-30 Waters- a shell mixup waiting to happen
7-08/280 is too close to the 7-30 Waters (although both are better rounds, I like 7mm in pistol)
Yes, I handload.

again, thank you all - I appreciate it.

They don't make a .357 max you have to do it yourself, Its a piece of cake thou buy a Magnum barrel and do it yourself you'll like it. Its a standard cartridge but it not loaded by alot of companys, Brass is easy to get all the other componets are .357/.38 stuff most .357 die sets will reload it also, You can still shoot .38s .357mags .360 DWs and .357 maxs out of the same barrell, I don't think you can get anymore versital than a .357.

BTW they are just plain ole fun to shoot. 8)

I am interested, but Midway wants $89 for the reamer, plus more for the go-no go guages. It sounds like a fun project, but I will have to save a few more pennies or give up the .204 barrel. This is definitly on my next buy list.

thanks

The reamer is only about $40 rented from our sponsor, 4D, go for it! ;)

You don't need the GO/NO GO gauges to do the max. The reamer stops cutting when you get to the rim, Built in head space gauge you could say, it just won't cut any deeper.  8)

Do I understand this rite? You can fire 9MM rounds through  a 357 Mag? If so I just learned something.

I'm absolutely in LOVE with my .204.....what else can you shoot that has almost zero recoil? AND moves that fast...  That means you can see CLEARLY and with no effort see what you just BLEW UP ;D ;D ;D  then 24" .243  the 26" .280....AND AND AND...you get the picture. .204 is a HOOT!

9mm bullets loaded in 357mag brass, not the 9mm cartridge.
