Lapping a new barrel
« on: February 12, 2007, 05:00:21 AM »
Another newbie question folks. I read on another muzzleloader site the writer recommends lapping a brand new barrel with a teflon paste. He states the teflon will seal the inside of the barrel. I guess this process has been used by target shooters for a long time.

I would like to know who all subscribes to this process and any other comments.

I have read here on this site, as others sites, a lot of folks use Butch's bore paste for preserving the barrel. Is this basically doing the same thing?

I haven't heard any thing about using Teflon in a bore for BR guns...I have used Moly- Fusion with pretty good results in one of my barrels..

No lapping for me. Just brought it home, cleaned it, then took it to the range.

With CVA's honing process...there really isn't any need to do this...The barrels are honed in a 3 step process...and are already extremely smooth, just as most match grade barrels are...Ed Shilen is their technical staff and he really knows how to do good barrels..

Thanks for the info guys. I think good old JB's bore paste once a month will do the trick. Pending upon the amount of shooting. Boy, cabin fever is at all time high here in Indiana. Ready to get out and dirty that gun up!

As smooth as these bore are on these Bergara barrels...I really don't think you will need to do any type of lapping on them..I just ran a dry patch down mine and shot them...Both have cleaned up in a matter of minutes..They are incredibly smooth & precise.

Actually, after a shooting session, I have been using boiling hot water and soap. Once I know its dry, I apply CVA's barrel lube and put away.
