What Caliber????????????????????
« on: February 12, 2007, 06:46:58 AM »
:o :o  I posted something similr on bolt gus and would like your input. I have found out my ole backside just can't take 06 recoil due to a serious injury I suffered many moons ago. I had my chest crushed in a car a wreck. I have a custom 98 in 6.55 Swede but want a good Elk load and new gun. I have a Ultra in 25-6 on layaway and i have been thinking of a 7mm-08 or something in the vain. What would u suggest for a good Elk rifle. Jess ??? ??? ???

.270  8)

You might want to look at some of the reduced recoil loads also.

You may want to consider getting your 06 ported. I know alot of guys dont like ported guns, But it would reduce recoil.
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

I have a similiar issue with my .300wsm Winchester Mod 70 after surgery on my back and one of my hands in the past 12 months. I am ready to give up that ride and jump on another ship. My gap in calibers is between my .243 and .300wsm. When I sell/trade my .300 wsm, I have pretty well settled on the 7mm-08 as it has a very good reputation (like many other calibers) and is as far as I want to go on the recoil scale for a while. I still want a 45/70 though but that will be for recreational shooting unless Indiana's newly proposed deer hunting calibers will include the 45/70.

I truly understand your wanting a new rifle...heck...who doesn't...But...you already have a potent elk cartridge in the Swede.....and it kicks a-lot less...It may not be flashy...it may not be a trendy magnum...it may not set any blistering speed contest...but thousands of elk sized animals and larger have succumb to the Swedish wonder.....I know you may be looking for something in a Handi...but...if it were me...and I needed a new rifle and couldn't handle the o6' recoil levels anymore...and wanted to hunt elk...I would have one made in the 6.5x55mm...plain and simple....As I was told recently by a good friend...don't look at the ballistic tables...look at the animals taken cleanly each year with it...

I agree with Mac. The 6.5 swede is underrated. IF I am not mistaken it is the most popular Moose caliber in the nordic countries IF your looking at that also condsider a 260. Rem hardly any recoil

Gentlemen I could not agree more. I don't handload but the PMC with the Gameking bullet is my choice for my elk load. This rifle puts em in less than an inch all day. In fact on Saturday I put 3 in 3/8" at 100 yards.ac I do want more than one Handi 25-06 is 1st, 2nd 7mm-08 and the a 30-30 and lastly a 22-250 or 223 Ultrs Fluted. I do appericiate your input, I know getting long in the tooth hurts to darn much.. ;D ;D ;D ;D.   God Bless All,

Jess, PMC went out of business last year, so if you like that ammo, better stock up if you can still get it. :-\

Well..like Quick has already said...PMC is out of business but I am sure you got some of their brass...and the Sierra bullets are available...so you should be able to duplicate your factory load...or get close to it anyway...The 25-06 is a good barrel in a Handi...Mine have been real good shooters...and all of them like Winchesters Supreme ammo too...It's a little pricey but it has been very accurate in mine..

A good reason to start handloading. ;D
