.308 bullets in 7.62 X 39 Soviet for SKS..
« on: February 12, 2007, 07:29:20 AM »
I first posted this on the military surplus forum, but ain't getting many bites...Has anyone tried .308 diameter bullets in the 7.62 X 39 round?  I know the American gun companies bore their barrels .308 with the rest of the world going .310-.311.  I am loading for my uncle's SKS and was hoping the manufacturing tolerances were on the small side. I have plenty of the proper weight bullets because I load for a .300 Whisper.  Maybe I'm being cheap..and should just go and buy a box of proper bullets!

They will shoot, but your going to be blowing gas all around them. You can buy .310 and .311 bullets if you want to reload your own. I have loaded all of my own riflw, handgun and shotgun ammo since the 1960`s, but when I bought a 7.62 x 39 that was built with a mil. pull off barrel I started shooting boughten ammo in it. The accuracy was at least as good or probibly better than what I loaded and I could buy the ammo already loaded for less than I could load it.

I'm going this as a favor for my uncle who hunts whitetails with his AKS..he has asked me to load some softpoints for him for years.  I have loaded for other family members and they have had good success with my loads. There is a good store in town who is getting outta the reloading business and have all of their stuff marked 1/2 off.  I bought dies for $12 and 100 pcs of brass for around$8..just looking to save alittle more and use the bullets I have on hand..

I tried some standard .308 in my Moisin because I had them, but the results were not good. Bought .311's and they work like a champ.
