Hey guys, check out the poll in the Handi centre fire forum. 45-70 wins over 30-30. That seals it then it really is just the 45-70 or maybe two of them, one lever action and one Handy ;D

A few years ago I decided I needed one lever action rifle. So,,,I bought an 1895  45/70. Now I am thinking I would like a 38/55, or a 35?

Don't be so Quick Mc...You already got one of the best 45-70's...Don't be so eager to discount what thousands of folks know...The 30-30 is a great round...especially in a Handi...It's a great round in a Marlin too...Do yourself a favor and have both...you won't regret it...

THe 45-70 Marlin is more accurate than a full tube mag 30-30 right? ;D

I want the 45-70 in either the 1894, 26" Cowboy version, or even the 22" Classic 1895 would be sweet.

The plain 336C in 30-30, has to be an SS.

Then I want the Blue/Walnut 336C in 35 Rem, lol

I also want a .35 Remington too, but I wish they offered it in a short barreled version like the Guide Gun.  A M39 with a straight stock and short barrel would be nice too.  The Cowboy with an 18" barrel would sell well IMO.

Marlin once did - just like they did with the .357 1894CP, the .44mag 1894P, & the .444P.
In a .35, you need to look for a Model 336D for a newer "Guide"-type gun - or either a "Texan" or "Maurader" in an older M336, both getting rather pricey if you can find one.

IIRC, the only caliber not made in a "Guide" config is the .30-30.

The 45-70 can be loaded 'down' for deer and 'up' for bear. The 30-30 just isn't enough for bear. The straight sides of the 45-70 cartridge I think are at least part of the reason it can be loaded down so low and up so high safely.

Well...I wouldn't say that...Load a 30-30 up on the warm side with a 170 grain Nosler Partition and I think it will handle most things that crawl out of the bush...Granted...it wouldn't be my first choice if going after some of the biggest bears on Kodiak...but I wouldn't be afraid being in bear country if I only had a 30-30 along...Also... I would be willing to wager a bunch of bears have been taken over years with it...not to mention elk..when folks were hunting...You are right though...I would much prefer having my 45-70 along...if specifically hunting big bears...but if truth be told...I wouldn't specifically use either one...and use something else...

Trying to say 1 is better than the other or having to choose 1 over the other to a bunch of lever gun fans and getting a definitive answer in favor of one...when both are truly loved is a waste of time :D :D :D :D :D These guys love them all...and wouldn't choose to not own several of each ;)

Pick up a XLR to go along with your 45-70..and make a matched pair in your Handi's too...you'll see they both will become your favorites...and you'll have a heck of a time deciding which to hunt with

I don't up or down load for deer or bear with my 45-70, I use the same bullet and load for either. As far as the 30-30, it is enough gun for black bear. Now if your talking Brown bear that is a different story.  JMHO.

Some of dem black bear's is very big and they're good climbers and they can out run you on an ATV. Better use a 45-70 and be sure. ;D

This has been a fun thread for me thanks to all you good natured folks out there. I have and like my 336 thuty-thuty but I honestly would not have bought one if I had known then what I know now about the 45-70. My XLR at mid-trapdoor loads is like shooting my BB gun again, it's that much fun.

I am looking for another 45-70 in a Handi now. Or maybe I'll get the 1895 Classic or Guide gun-----------a bit of Marlinitis setting in perhaps. ;D

The .30-30 is much cheaper to shoot, & it's recoil is non-existant.  I like and have both.

I have an 1895GS, non-ported.  It is my favorite rifle and is so much fun to experiment with different loads.  Trouble is, it is great with everything I try in it so I can't decide on just one formula.  It shoots lead bullets as well as expensive jacketed bullets so I love to try them.  I once got two large pigs with one shot using a 460 gr. hammerhead at 1550fps, open sights and first time hunting with it.  I guess that experience was just the start of my enjoyment with this rifle.  Looks and carries great.

I have a  Guide gun in 45-70. I'm working up loads for the 525 grain Beartooth and plinking loads with homecast 340 grainers.  I also have a 44 cowboy that I enjoy, but am gonna put a recoil pad on as I am a wimp. It isn't so much a heavy recoil as sharp.  Next comes trying loads with Lee's 310 cast gascheck. I hope I can make it shoot with the slow twist in the Marlin.   I've been wanting a 35 Remington, so I guess the question is:

Lloyd Smale......Does your girlfriend (the one who owns a 35 Rem) .............  have a sister? :)
