I once had to use an extended shellholder in order to be able to use a 30 carbine trim die. The die was so short that the face was below the top of the press when in contact with the STD shellholder.

The RCBS competition seating die requires an extended shell holder for some shorter cartridges, including .308, in order to get the cartridge up high enough in the die to seat the bullet. This is a common problem with windowed seater dies, since the bullet is inserted above the top of the press, and is higher than in traditional seating dies.

CH4D also makes a shell holder extension, that installs in the ram just like a shell holder, and your regular shell holder installs in it. 3/4" extension, IIRC. A good deal if you would need more than one extended shell holder for different cartridges.
