TC Big Bore 58 cal

I just bought one of these off another forum. Should be here by the end of the week. I have couple of 50's but no experience with this large of caliber. Anyone used one of these? Anyone recomend ball/patch size? I have always shot PRB in my 50's but was thinking about a conical for this beast. Any advise? I am not even sure of the twist in this barrel but the price was right and I coudn't pass it up.

Wynn the big bore has a 1 in  48 twist it will shoot round ball or mini or the tc maxi hunter and with that it will put any thing down that you have in the USA.give thompson centre  a ring and see if they still have an owners manual for it that will give you all the loads you need for both ball and bullet.

If you are shooting roundballs, a .570" roundball, with a .015", or .018" patch will work. T/C 's manual lists 80 to 120 grains FFG with this ball/patch combo. Maxi-Ball, and Maxi-Hunter, 555 grain, and 560 grain, 80, to 120 grains FFG. 1 in 48" twist.

Thanks, dodd3 and Landngroove. I am looking forward to working up a PRB load for this thing. I have hogs comeing to a feeder I have had out for 4 months and have yet to hunt over. This rifle may be just the ticket for the 300 lb Piney Woods Rooter I saw there last week. Not sure I want to try the recoil of a big conical over a stout charge but I probably will. LOL.

Since you asked I'll give an opinion...I have a .58cal GM barrel in a TC Hawken stock and the .58cal is an outstanding caliber...the big 279grn ball will take most anything on the NA continent.
Let me repeat that to ensure it's clear:  the big 279grn ball will take most anything on the NA continent.

You really, really, really do not need to punish yourself with a huge, heavy recoil, rainbow trajectory 535grn conical...if you decide to go after the big bears way up North, then get a couple boxes of .58cal Hornay conicals...which by the way are also very expensive.

But otherwise, I promise you'll find the .570/279grn round ball to be totally lethal on anything else you'd hunt in the US.
And 1:48's shoot RBs extremey well...even just a mid-range powder charge of 100grns Goex 2F will make complete passthroughs on every eastern deer and it's devastating on them...carries energy to long distances as well.

Note: the Big Boar just has a single manual trigger...does not have a set trigger.

Question for roundball. Will the barrel for the Big Bore match up with the stock & lock of my older Renegade that has the set trigger? I'm kind of partial to the set trigger on all of my 50 cals.

Timely question...I am considering a 58 cal barrel from Fox Ridge for my older Renegade stock with double triggers. The Big Boar, as I understand, came with the single trigger and a rubber recoil pad (for obvious reasons  :o ), as did the newer Renegade 50 cal. I am 99% certain the 58 cal will fit the older Renegade stock...but I will verify with T/C before I purchase. The loading information for the 58 cal is in T/C's manual for side lock firearms; available at their website; bottom tab on the left-hand side of the main screen. I love an ouch now and again  8)

Several years ago I got a 58 from Cabela’s.  It is a good looking gun and shoots patched 570 round balls well with about 60gr of 2F but goes all over the place when the load is around 100gr.  I have tried REAL bullets and sabots in it with less than satisfactory results, as both seem to slide down the barrel too easily.  A 58 mini seems to shoot the best in it.

RANGER: HAVE TRIED A WAD UNDER THE PATCHED ROUND BALL WHEN USING HEAVY POWDER LOADS??

I went ahead and ordered a .570 RB mould but I found out today that I have to work the next 3 weekends. Working up a load will have to be postponed for now. I have had improved accuracy using wads (lubed felt) under most anything I have launched out of my 50's. May have to find a punch for the 58. I will try the 58 barrel in the Renegade stock when the gun arrives and report the results. A friend of mine just gave me two huge hornet nests. I have heard it makes a superior wad under a RB or conical. Any comments on hornet nest wadding?

Yes, it's the same 1" barrel, fits the barrel beds of all the Renegade type stocks...and that's why I mentioned the set trigger to be sure you knew.

I've gotten to the point over the years that the set trigger is all I use...range or hunting...I've never been so surprised by a deer that I didn't have plenty of time to slip off a glove and use the set trigger...for me, it maximizes my accuracy

Well, it's hard to come by... ;D...so I just use Oxyoke's prelubed Wonderwads...used them for years under all hunting rifle loads.

I use bald faced hornets nest in my muzzle loaders. Grand pa did and taught my dad who taught me.
I don't seem to have a hard time finding them some times they leave them under a hunting blind.


Hardest thing is getting them from the places they leave them, like high in the trees.
I also use dryer lint which the wife has a lot of .
