Favorite Hornet Ammo?
« on: February 13, 2007, 08:44:47 AM »
What has been your favorite Hornet ammo for your Handi rifle?  Tried any value ammo? Overseas stuff?  I ordered a couple box's of Sellier & Bellot that is near value .223 ammo costs (cheap).  I will let you know how it shoots.
Mine does well with the Winchester 46 hp and the Hornady 35 vamax.

Those who reload please share you most accurate loads.

13grs Lil' Gun, Win brass, WSR primers and the 35gr Vmax, shoots excellent!

Mine seemed to like the 46 winchester pretty well, the hornady stuff was OK.

Have not reloaded for it yet and I have since converted it to k-hornet, I had to special order dies so I am a few weeks out from load testing.

But really the loading procedure I have been reading should be comparable, this is what I have picked up along the way.

1. Watch the presures
2. Resize as little as possible, neck sizing would be best but not always possible with a handi.
3. Load increments will small during testing +- 0.1 of a grain can make a huge difference
4. Case prep, flashhole deburing and consitant trimmng.
5. Loads could be primer sensitive and some powders do better with pistol primers , there is no actual data but nosler mentions it as one of the options of getting accuracy.

Powder wise I am betting the farm on Lil'Gun, it's not always the top velocity wise (though generally close though) it gives signficantly lower pressures which is desirable with the wimpy hornet case. A good performer if you want to use heavier bullets, in the k-hornet with a 50 gr head it is 200 fps faster than the other powders and again with lower pressures. Supposidly it is one of those powders that do better with pistol primers.

More than once I have read remington brass holds .5 of a grain more powder compared to the others.

I'll recommend the Lee collet die to increase case longevity, a great choice. ;) It can be purchased separately also.

When I 1st got my hornett onlyammo i cold find find was Sellers & Bellott.
It shot like Sxxt, diffence in sound between shots. When went to reload,
Broke decaping pin, A lot of the primer holes was to small, I will NEVER
buy anymore Sellers & Bellot ammo in any caliber.

I'll second Tims recipe above.

Seems to me it was around 2850fps, but I don't remember for sure, it's been a while since I chrono'd it. Looking at Hodgdon's data, H110 will get you about 3000fps, but at a lot more pressure, 24kcup for the Lil'gun load and 41.4kcup for the H110, both at max!!
