A little different scope for my 50
« on: February 13, 2007, 05:29:17 PM »

I figured...why not...it aught to help my groups.. :D

It's my Smith & Wesson 6-24x42mm mil-dot reticle I got on a trade with Quick a while back....It's sitting in a set of Leupold high QWR rings..with plenty of room all around...I could have gotten by with a medium or low set...but these were already on the scope...

PS...This one is for you lik2hunt...Yup...I did pick up a few things when I got it :D :D :D :D :D

I guess I have to go thru the weeding out process...I gotta to figure out what I actually need to make this smoke pole thing work good :-[ All you guys that have been doing this for a while...already have done this...I do know it's sorta like regular centerfire shooting...there's a whole bunch of stuff that's available that supposedly makes doing this easier...Sheese ::) the amount a person can get for his MZ is worse I think...

Hmmm, maybe I shoulda kept that scope, it sure looks good on the OE!! ;)

Loading for a ML is just like handloading, only one bullet at a time in the barrel!! ;D And you need to replicate each load every time you load it so it's consistent. Since you most likely won't be loading PRB, that's a couple less variables, patch thickness and ball size. Pick your bullet, then powder, work up in 5gr by volume increments pouring powder(if loose powder) into a measure and leveling it the same way each time, wiping the bore between shots...another variable, how you wipe. Most will use a damp patch, followed by a dry patch, then load and shoot again. Some will pop a cap after wiping, another variable. Whatever method you choose, just do it the same each time. ;)

I would also recommend you check state rules for ML seasons to make sure the components and equipment you use are within their rules, some states are very restrictive on the ML seasons as far as firearms and components, and they may change at anytime, Idaho just made a lot of inlines illegal for primitive seasons. :(

Good shooting!! ;)

Mac11700, you should be able to get some great groups with that rifle and scope combination. Here in Utah we can not use any scope on a muzzleloader other than a 1X power or red dot. But with that handicap I have had some good groups with a red dot scope. You will find shooting a muzzleloader can become addicting. Good luck and let use know how it goes ;D

It is a very good way to see what your MZ barrel will do, or for that matter, any future barrels.

Thanks BJM...I really like the thumb hole stock too...I also like my Sons regular stocked ones as well...

The recoil pad on these rifles is just as good as any of the Limb Savers I have used...and even better than any Pachmayer I've shot with...The more I shoot them...the more I like them...With the stock & fore arm the way it is...it recoils almost perfectly straight back in the bags...and shooting it as any other rifle with it positioned forward on the front rest...

I checked my friend's local gunshop Thursday and he had one combo (50cal and .243 black fiber grip no TH) for $450. I got out the .243 barrel and examined it with my limited knowledge and guys ... I can't "see" anything but quality here. I haven't fired one of these Elites and I do not own one yet but lock-up is excellent and it feels right. He has also all of the Durasight mounting systems in stock. Is there an advantage of the single base over the 2 psc base sytem or vice versa?

You can get about 1/2" closer eye relief with the 2pc bases..due to where the slots are..

Mac, how much eye relief do you have now? I think I would feel comfortable around 3.5" plus. I wear glasses and need plenty of room.

With my 4x12  VX-1 I just put on it, I have right at 4"...with my 6x24 S&W target scope right at 3"...and I wear glasses as well now...Neither one comes close to tagging my eye with any of the loads I have put thru them..

Mac, you had a previous post concerning CVA's mounts. You indicated that you got .5 inch closer with seperate mounts. Can I assume then, if I want maximum eye relief with the CVA mounts then go with the single mount and go as far forward as it will allow?

Thanks

Yes..the center to center measurements for rings in the furthest slots is 3.165" for the 1pc...and 3.520" for the 2pc...The 2pc gives the widest measurement between the rings...and will depend on which scope your using and how much tube is between the turrets and the objectives...My S&W target scope has 3.50" between the turret and objective and my Leupold has 2.20" of tube...With the Leupold's non-critical eye relief I can gain more since I still have a clear sight picture with the scope out to 5" or more..That's one of the nice features of the Leupold scopes.

Mac.

I was talking to Quick last night about his new-to-him 7-08...and discussing his scope mounts..when I discovered much to my embarrassment :-[ :-[ :-[ that on the center fire barrels...the scope base screws are placed closer to the chamber end than than those of the muzzle loader barrel...The distance from the rear scope base screw center to the end of the barrel is 1.400"....and the distance on the center fire scope base hole to the chamber is .700"...Which puts the center of the scope ring 1.210" from the end of the chamber and the center of the rear scope ring on the muzzle loader 1.750"...This will make having a 2pc base on the center fire too short for a-lot of scopes...and make getting the 1pc base much better...Hopefully they will be having the scope base screw placement on the 26" bull barrels the same as that of the muzzle loaders..but due to the chamber swell on the standard contours..it don't think they will change it..I'll ask the guys at CVA if they know more about it..Sorry for the confusion..

The 2-pc mount that came on my OE is the Weaver #418M, not a good choice!
