Ruger MK II with scope mount !
« on: February 14, 2007, 06:32:18 AM »
I am ready to purchase a mk II , what I am wondering is did any of the mk II's come from the factory with the means to mount a scope , either drilled and tapped or with the grooves for a set of rings . What I am thinking is ,its for my son and we will shoot it for a while with the iron sites but some day might want to put a scope on it and it would be nice if it was already set up from the factory for it.

Yes, the MK II slab sided pistol came with scope rings to mount on the pistol.  However, if you can't find a used one, you'll have to get a MK III.  (BTW, it is an extremely accurate pistol with a scope mounted, but unwieldy.)

Only the flat-side came with a scope mount or rings ?? None of the regular bull barrel guns ??

The more recent MKIIs with the bull barrel came with a weaver style rail and was drilled and tapped.  I put a red dot on mine after shooting it for awhile like you plan.  I used quick release rings so I can take it off or put it back on at will.  I am now thinking I would like to add a low power scope to the package.  It is fun to shoot now matter how you set up it.  The new MKIIIs with the bull barrels should come the same way.  Check their website.

Back when AMT was producing their copy of the Ruger, they gave it a grooved receiver just like all .22 rifles. I've always wondered why Ruger did not follow that plan.  The grooved receiver provides a very low mounting, adds no weight or bulk and would add very little to production cost, just a winning idea which Ruger never took up.
The story of David & Goliath only demonstrates the superiority of ballistic projectiles over hand weapons, poor old Goliath never had a chance.

I think the Weaver rail is a much more secure mounting system than a dovetail.  But you are right it is cheap.  I dont like to scratch up my receiver tho.

not that I know of.  You might try the Ruger forum.  The MKII and MKIII have a few diffs, location of mag release, integral lock, loaded chamber indicator and that may be the big ones.  The scope mounting info stays about the same.  Bull Barrels come wiht Weaver and are drilled and tapped.  Just check it out when you find a used one.  Ask about the rail ect.  It is easy to install.  4 screws that go into the receiver.  There are also mounting systems out there that would work if the gub was made prior to the rail being a standard part.  I think they came with the gun starting in 2002? I may be wrong.  Call Ruger.

There are other mounting systems out there.  I saw one that used the dovetail from the rear site and somehow attached to the receiver in the front.  Look around at different catalogues on line like Midway, Brownells, Natchez, etc. to see what is around.  You should be able to find a recent one that comes wth the rail.  Even new there is not much of a price difference.  You may be looking at 50 bucks in savings on a used.  On guns in the low price range it is easier to just buy new. I buy used if the gun is not made any more or I see a great deal.  Otherwise for the cost diff it ain't worth the headache.

Hey Mike , I started out looking for a MKII , sounds like they have them figured out pretty good from being around so long , and I thought I had to find used as there no longer made , and now to get the rail mount I have to find a fairly new model MKII , when you suggested maybe going new did you mean move up to the MKIII or look for new MKII'S ?  thanks

If you cant find a new MKII left over or a used one without a lot of looking just buy a MKIII.  The target model blued bull 5 1/2 in barrel is around $300 give or take maybe 20 bucks.  I would he happy with one.  I just got back from th erange and put my red dot back on and it is still right on at 30-40 ft.  That is the distance I like to shoot bowling pin outline targets.  I like to put the shots into the top part what ever that is called.

I used the factory scope mount on my MKII and my MKII and it works great. There is also a clamp on mount called the SoLow that I have heard work great!

If memory serves me, I do believe any of the MKII's that had adj. sights also came with a scope mount.

If the shows are anything like the ones in Michigan you will do better buying at a dealer who has a store.  Then you know where to find him later.  This prices might be better too.

Try www.jackweigand.com for a non drill and tap mount for the MKII
Also B-Square.
Check Rimfirecentral classifieds for deals on MKIIs and MKIIIs.
I got a SS MKII slabside with a T/C scope for $325 shipped.
It was 98% with 4 mags.
Also got MKIII SS hunter with custom grips, and 4 mags for $325. NIB
Just be patient and ck every day.

Here's another idea. I'm getting ready to order one of these for my mark III.

I just bought a slightly used MK II Slabside Target Competition model with the scope mount and rings. I probably paid a little more than I should have but it was still much cheaper than a new MK III.
