Question for Lloyd Smale

Hay Lloyd, what is the strongest single action Ruger in 45 colt made. I am thinking of getting one and I want to push some heavy loaded 45 colts. I want the strongest frame Ruger makes.

the old vaqueros and blackhawks have the same strenght. The first bisley vaquero i had was torchered beyond belief. I put 5 shot level loads through it all the time (BUT CERTIANLY DONT RECOMEND IT) The gun after a while became a rattle trap. It was a younger dumber Lloyd that loaded for that gun. It never blew up (probably luckily) but the cylinder nose and ratchet got so beat up that the gun shook like a rattle and had a ton of side to side play. Funny thing is is that it was an exceptional shooter when new and still was like that. I ended up sending it to Clements and he fit a new cylinder cut the barrels tightened the whole gun up fit a drift sight and case hardened and round butted it. It came out beautiful and it doesnt see loads like that anymore. It is the gun that educated me into my firm belief that a 300 grain bullet at 1100 fps will do ALOT of killing and about all tacking 400 fps on to that does is destroy a nice gun. If i had to recomend one gun for playing with heavys in the .45 it woud be the accusport bisley. To me anyway you need a bisley if you want to shoot big loads alot. The blackhawk grip frame is serviceable but will beat you up on a long day at the range and the only other bisleys are the vaqueros and there not near as flexible in loads to keep poa.

Thanks Lloyd. I called my gunsmith last night after looking at the Ruger web site. I ordered a New Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8 inch SS 45 Colt. Even though I have more guns than I need, I just wanted another toy to play with.  ;D

should be a nice gun. Ive been working on a 44 mag just like it. I put a bowen rear sight and a clements post front sight on it a belt mountain pin. Sanded the warning off the barrel  picked up a set of micra grips and sent them to 44man to scrimshaw. Still have to get my buddy to do the action job on it. Those 4 5/8 rugers are about the perfect gun to carry on a belt in the woods for hunting

I wanted a lighter guns for running up and down the hills. I thought about the 44 Mag, but I just like the 45 Colts. See you are rubbing off on me. I just had to get back into them single actions, not that I ever left.  ;D :D

I have had a Blackhawk in 45 Colt at 4 5/8 inches for years and love it for many reasons. I use it primarily for back up when archery deer hunting in bear country. It is light, compact, accurate and a heavy hitter. A max charge of Unique pushing a 250 grain cast rnfp is devastating on whitetail since I have at times carried only this gun deer hunting. The stock adjustable sights work well for me. The entire gun will fit in my coat pocket. I have shot 335 grain cast bullets at maximum speed but the recoil is fierce with these heavy slugs. Now I use strictly the 250 cowboy slugs which are available and inexpensive. I believe you will enjoy this gun and good luck with it.

Picked up the Blackhawk today. I really like the way it feels. Now off to get some ammo and shot them up so I can get to reloading.  ;D

Mornin' guys.  I have been toying with the thought of sending off a Bisley Blackhawk to get it customed.  I love the .45 Colt and reload for it in the Bisley and my SBH Hunter.  I am not sure if I want to stay with the .45 or go with the .454???!!??!!??!

Also, I have got to think of finances.  I am retired and want to get hte biggest bang for my buck.  I would be looking for a five shot cylinder with maybe an octogonal barrel.  Who would I be looking for to get this done.  I have heard all the different gunsmiths, but word-of-mouth is worth a fortune to a perspective buyer.

using your criteria id recomend Dave Clements as his prices are about the most reasonable out of all the gunsmiths that do good work. Me id do the 45 colt as it will do about anything in a 5 shot that is reasonalbe that a 454 will do and brass is easier to come by. Granted you can shoot 45s in a 454 but you had better be willing to do some serious cleaning in a tight chambered gun to switch back and forth.

Lloyd I think you have a point.  I have always been an extreme fan of the .45 Colt.  I can't think of too many things I can't do with a .45 Colt.  Does this fella have a website?  I would like to get in touch with him and go over my options.

Did you have any work by him?  I don't think I have heard of him too much.

Forget the website, I just googled him and found it.  thanks for the tip.

Larry hes built 4 guns for me and has done work on a few others and does fine work. Theres a few others on here that have had work done and were happy with him to. He does top shelf work at reasonable prices.
