New 243 barrel which one ?
« on: February 15, 2007, 03:29:57 AM »
Hello again folks. I just can't enough of this forum. You folks are a wealth of information and thanks in advance for any help or support.
I'm the guy thats having problems with a 20" 243 handi. Iam considering purchasing another barrel in 243 since I already have alot of money tied up in reloading dies and bullets and such. I just dont know which barrell . NEF list several in 243, 22" 24"bull 24" bull fluted. I know I want a bull but I Im not clear what the advantags would be of a fluted barrel.
This rifle wold be used to ride on a four wheeler and to protect my squrrel dogs from wild hogs, when they accendenly get after one which latly, has happened alot. I do reload for this rifle and Im not satisfied with the accuracy of the 20" barrel . Im thinking that a longer bull should more accurate. What is your thoghts? Should I give up on 243 and go to a different cal. I have a 280 cal. 26" thats pretty darn accurate and I love it. What do you guys think?

                                                               Thanks      Jim

I'll go first ... I am a fan of bull barrels and have four rifles with them. All are very accurate rifles that I can shoot more and worry less about getting the barrels getting hot too quickly. The .243 is an excellent caliber for what you have in mind. I do not own any fluted barrels but the advantages would include ... somewhat lighter and better heat disipation because of a larger surface area.

My sights are set on a 24" straight bull barrel. From all indications they seem to be an excellent choice.
Flutes are nice to look at, but I don't especially have a need for them. Plus the other is cheaper.
But I plan on target shooting, and Varmint hunt with mine. For what you are talking about I would opt for a 22" Bull Barrel, just to shorten things up a bit.
Sorry to hear about your pains with the SuperLight, I guess some of these take a little more work than others. But the Bull Barreled 243's seem to have a very good reputation.

If it was up close I would want a bigger hole than a 243, especially when my dog comes into play. Have you thought of a 45-70 lots of wallop & I see you reload. You would have to get new dies brass etc.
I would keep the 280 with me other wise, just don't like them hogs around my dogs or kids. Just a thought I love my 45-70

If I had to do a 243 i'd get either 22 or 24 If you need to be quick on a target I like the shorter barrel And use a heavy premium bullet, hogs can be tough
That's my boy, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

If it was me getting a new 243 , the 24" bull would be my choice . the flutes look neat , but for what you are doing the standard bull will fit the bill very well and shoot great too . just my .02 worth .

And the $ 20 diffrence in price will cover your shipping to get the barrel . ;)
