Why all this fuss about the 700s recently...what has changed?
« on: February 15, 2007, 06:05:36 AM »
I dont have a great deal of experience with the remington 700 so please excuse me if this has been covered.  It seems that latley i have been reading alot of negative posts reguarding their current rifles.  Why is this?  I was looking at my brother and fathers 700s made in the mid 70s and comparing them to the new one i just bought, and the several at my local dealer, i can see no diference.  Whats the deal?  Typicly at the range, i see the remingtons grouping fantastic, honestly better than anything else, and to boot they have the reputation as having some of the finest barrels available.  Also, their action is as smooth as any and stronger than all.  Their triggers are adjustable and they have a diverse product line.  Im not trying to talk them up, im just curious as to why so many people are having problems of late.  I have no great emotional ties to their line, as i own rifles by many other makers, but i have always considered the 700 to be a top of the line peice....whats the deal?
I am not afraid to make an example out of you

Some people try to put down Remington because they have had the Model 700 out since 1962 (why change a good thing) and they like to pay more for a shiny rifle (Browning). Model 700's are the most popular bolt action rifle around. Sportsmen, Military and Police sniper teams, and Competitors all use them with great success. You would be hard pressed to find a 700 that wont shoot 11/2" @ 100 yds. (most will shoot under an inch, especially with handloads)

I have an -06 from the first year they released the 700 adl and a 7 mag from 2001,they both shoot 1" at 100 yards, the -06 will do it with factory ammo after who knows how many thousands of rounds through it,i shoot nothing but handloads from the 7mag.They havnt lost any of thier quality. Now the Rem 710 is a different story, they are still accurate but they look and feel like crap,a good price though.

My .204 LVSF 700 was purchased new 2/14/07. After proper breakin, the gun will not shoot under 2" groups at 75 yards. They want me to ship it back for an evaluation. I'll never buy another Reminton again. Too many other manufacturers that offer accuracy gaurantees.

There have been a few ppl w/ accuracy complaints, I feel bad for 'em. My 700 sps (.270) shot 1 1/2in groups @ 100 yds. out of the box. After break-in, DIY bedding and trigger job it stays 1" and under w/ factory ammo. I love it.

I tried them all. Reminton 40's Hornady 32 and 40's. In all, I went through 120 rounds and was able to get one 1.75 group at 75 yards. I clean after ten rounds to the metal, shooters choice and sweet's. The 1.75" group came after I freefloated the barrel and threw in my Jewell trigger set at 8 oz. I'm a very active reloader and shooter and can place the blame on the rifle. I'll see what Remington will do, but I suspect I'll be sending the action out for a blueprint and screwing on a Lilja.

No maker of anything has a total lock on good or poor quality on each and every product going out their doors  but the Rem 700 has been the most popular hunting rifle on the market ever since it was introduced.   Not every one is prefect but they are all pretty good and some are great.  Competetors have come and gone but the 700 rides on.

There are reasons for that.  You named some of the most important ones.

Common sense is an uncommon virtue

Yeah, there is something wrong there.  I bet Remington will make it right.

I think you'll find those "accuracy guarentees" range in the area of 1.5" or so. But, good luck.

There are a few companies that offer a rifle or two w/ sub-MOA guarantees, but (correct me if I'm wrong, please) so far every one that I've seen is $1000+....

While I got no guarantee... My Remington shoots sub-MOA and my total investment in the gun is just shy of $400.

If you buy a guarantied rifle and it doesn't shoot well you will have to ship it in too.
It's not like there going to come to your house to fix it.
