S&W for PPC IPSC IDPA ...
« on: February 15, 2007, 07:29:32 AM »
Which model would you recommend for practical competitive shooting? I know the 625 seems to be popular, but is anyone shooting a .38/.357 they'd recommend. And of course its got to be a Smith :)

Thanks,
Chaps

My PPC gun I had built back in the 80's was made on my S&W Model 19. This gun was fitted with a Bill Davis slab side barrel with an adjustable front sight ( 7, 25, & 50yrds ). It was set up for DA only. Even though I haven't shot PPC in 15+ years I still can't part with this gun. It was super super accurate & the slickest action you've ever touched. We use to have PPC shoots all over the state ( VT.) almost every weekend back then. Not much going on anymore for these type of shoots around here. Kind of miss it.  :'( :'( :'(

I have played with my 25-2 in IPSC in years past. I am pretty slow with it, but I shoot A’s with it. It has a 5” barrel. If I were to try it now, I would use my 4” 625-8JM. These days I am shooting CAS with .45 and .357 NMBHs.

When I shot PPC I had a Davis built gun on a S&W M64.  I thought it was about as good as it got.

Then I got a S&W 686 to shoot in the Distinguished category.  After one season I looked at my scores and they were with in 1 point of the Davis gun.  The "X" count was lower but the score was about the same.  I ended up using the 686 for the last three years I shot PPC.  6" for most of the matches, 4" for duty matches.

I did use a M25 with a 4" for one duty match but went back to the 686.  It was plenty accurate and the larger holes allowed me a few more points but it did not seem sporting so I shot the 38's like everyone else.

Can't speak to the other types of competition as I've never competed in them.

Good Luck

For several years, I used a M66 with a 2 1/2" barrel in IDPA. In IDPA at that time, the 625 ruled. However at the 99 Championship I finished second in the Marksman SSR division.
Today, IIRC, there are 2 revolver divisions. SSR, for regular speedloaded revolvers and ESR for guns useing moonclips. So you can choose your revolver based on your favorite style. A 625 is not needed to win.

I noticed on the S&W website that they have a special IDPA model now.

My PPC gun was built on a Model 13 that I won in my first PPC match.
