OOOh my poor back

Just kiddin ;D I thought some would like to see a small project of mine. My next cannon project has some weight to it. The barrels are are going to be made out of 4" shaft, 26" long. they are to be polished. This means that any dings I make, have to be polished out. to make it easer to load and unload the barrels into my lathe gently I modified A junked scooter lift. It mounts into my quick change toolpost like the polisher that I just built. I can run the boom to the ceiling in my shop.

Now all you need is a lift to load the lift etc.
When i was in the navy we had Charlie "chainfall" de Long, Not only could he lift unbeliveable weights he could set them down gently ,WHERE THEY NEEDED TO BE! (we were assembling arresting gear on a carrier)
He stiill sticks in my mind 50 years later!

I hope you have a pretty hefty QC tool post.  That 100 lb piece of steel is going to put some heavy moments on it when you first put the weight on.  I would try to make a clamp that engaged the bed ways like a tailstock.  No point in stressing the carriage also.

Wes,

     It looks very useful.  We are getting real tired of using an engine hoist to get those 240 pound rounds up on the lathe and off again.  What a pain!
So how many of these did you say you were building?

 Watch the Tool Post and Carraige,  It will put some stress on them.  I need to come up with a hoist over my lathe.  Today I got a shipment of steel, a 20' lenght of 4" 1045, (1/3 scale tubes) and a 20" piece of 9" Dis. steel.  Its gonna be a lot of machineing, but that 9" Dia. will make one nice  :)  full scale 24 Pdr Coehorn Mortar.  It's going all the way to the East Coast.

Great perspective, Wes.

Let me illustrate it, if it's not obvious.  We put about $150,000 (where I work, not me) into a gantry and 2 ton hoist for material handling to the band saw.  (Once in small chunks, no problems.)

A LOT of money?  No.  It's about what would be paid out in ONE lawsuit for a back injury.

Nice!

I just got a 24" section of both 3" and 2.25" dia 1045 as well as my 6"dia x 6" rod of 4140. These are going to be bad enough to handle...I was wondering how y'all managed the larger ones!

At work right now were starting some gearbox shafts that start out as 8" shaft. There 35" long. When finished the gearbox weighs a bit over 2 tons. One time my boss thought he could haull one to Oregon in his half ton truck ;D

Did it take acturally loading it, or was it the slow realization of 2 - 1/2 = 1-1/2 tons overweight.
