My 16.5" 357 with the Survivor stock is going to the range tomorrow to try out a new coyote load.  It sure looks stubby with the survivor forearm I'm thinking of getting a shorter forearm so it looks more balanced.  I've got a red dot on mine, the only thing I would be worried about in a short 30-30 would be the muzzle blast, I think I would go with 18".

After my experience with my 16.5" 223, the blast was why I went with the 18" on my 30-30 and 20" on my 45-70 Carbines. The bigger the case, the more barrel I think it needs. Just my feeling. I realize some people really like that blast.

I have a pre angle eject Winchester 94 trapper in 30-30 (no it is not for sale) and I really can't tell a whole lot of difference between it and a standard 20" 30-30 as far as blast.  I haven't shot it over a chronograph but there is probably about 80-100 fps loss in velocity over the 20" the deer I have shot with it didn't seem to notice but where I hunt with it at 75 yards is an unheard of long shot.  Thus the 4" less barrel is way more of a benefit than 100 fps less velocity is a liability.  I too am getting ready to have a couple of my handi barrels cut, someone posted a picture of a cut 45-70 that pushed an idea in the back of my mind to the front.  That and how handy my 18.5 inch shotgun barrel is on my Handi.

I really do not see the advantage to shortening a barrel. They look pretty cool but why would you trade that for loss of bullet speed.

I would leave a little legal room to recrown the barrel if it was mine.
18" single shot would be shorter than any legal lever or bolt gun anyway.

Hey Guys,

My wife's Marlin 336 in 30-30 has been shortened to 16 1/2 inches, and will bench  groups at 100 yards you can cover with a quarter.  Strangely, the deer on the receiveing end don't seem to notice the diffenence in bullet speed.

....why would you trade that for loss of bullet speed.

Changed balance? Handier in brush? Or getting in and out of truck? Personal preference? Easier to swing as a club when you are under attack by wounded bear when case fails to eject? Lighter and easier to carry when you are trying to out run the bear? Those are just some of mine. I'm sure others have their own.

...I don't have to outrun da bear, just mt3030?
...there are many kinds of wounded, and only one kind of dead. Do it the Handi way, one shot, one kill.

if anyone is planning on taking their cut down nef's outside of the US, like lets say hunting to canada, I believe the minimun rifle barrel length is 18.5".  just might want to consider this before cutting down your barrels.  jim
life is to short to hunt with an ugly gun
