Suggestions Needed for First Traditional ML

im already getting a white super 91 .504 . im also thinking of buying a traditional ml as well. id like to buy a kit and build it myself. id like to to try to find a cva kit. are the tradition kits worth the money and if so, which one would you buy? my budget is under $250. any suggestions ? Tim

Stretch your budget a bit and get a Lyman Great Plains Rifle kit in 54 cal.  Then you'll have somethin'.

I think the best value for the bucks is the Lyman Trade Rifle in a finished gun. You don't really save much money with a kit. I've bought finished guns even though I intended to completely reshape and finish the stock to slim it down and straighten the lines for a more attractive profile and a bit less weight. The kits have a lot of excess wood which I do not enjoy having to remove.  If you must have a kit then the Lyman Great Plains is a good one. I feel the Lyman Trade Rifle is every bit as good a gun as the T/C so-called "Hawken" for 2/3 the price and the Great Plains is much more like a "real" Hawken, though still not very close and it also costs less than a T/C. I've had to do a lot of work on friends Traditions rifles and can assure you they are in no way up to the standards of Lyman guns, same as CVA.

I think Coyotejoe has it bang on. I have been hunting with a .50 cal Lyman Deerstalker for the past 14 years and just got a new Trade rifle in .54. There is nothing wrong with my Deerstalker, but I wanted a .54, and my grandson will need a rifle soon, so he will use the Deerstalker. I looked at the Great Planes rifle, but don't like hauling a 9 lb rifle around all day. The Trade weighs in at 8 lbs, and that is just about perfect for me. The only thing I don't like about the Trade  is the sights, so I got the hunting sights from Lyman. They are the same sights used on thier Deerstalker, and as far as I am concerned they are the best hunting sights out there.
