.45 Colt and SB-2 Receiver - rechamber to .454 Casull?
« on: February 16, 2007, 10:13:56 AM »
Hope I didn't miss something if this has already been a topic here ......

I like the thought of shooting the .45 Colt "junior buff classic" in the new barrel NEF is bringing out.  How safely (to shooter and frame) can that barrel be rechambered to .454 Casull?

Thanks ahead of time.   ;)

Too much back thrust.  The frame will stretch .

It may shoot loose, but it won't be the frame stretching, the soft underlug will setback if anything, that's what happened to the .300WSM, didn't hurt the frame at all.

Cougar,

Just a little food for thought.....a few years ago when Linebaugh was turning out his first five shot revolvers, a fellow named Ross Seyfried  (an professional hunter in Africa) acquired one  in .45 Colt.  It load drove a 345 grain hard cast .452" bullet at 1550 fps.  Seyfried used the revolver to kill more than one Cape Buffalo quite satisfactorily.

The full house Casull may be more than you need!!  Free bore the 45 Colt throat and seat the bullet out a bit (reduces pressure with the larger space inside the brass)....you may be able to get Seyfried's buff killer without straining your Handi.   Say you're only able to get 1400 fps.....okay.... how many buff will you see here in the USA?

Hmmmmm......no, I have not done this......no, I'm not a gunsmith........ yes, I've a .45 Colt  Big Ruger that I load heavily.

I can see why everyone wants to go 454.  I personally love the round, but I have a 45-70, the 45-70 can be loaded with 250gr bullet to the same velocity of the 454 then some.

Thank you all, for your posts and insights, and great tidbits.

1400fps from a .45C in a rifle would indeed be quite impressive, 1500 even more so.    ;D
