.300 Whisper (300-221) Question

Hi All, 

I need some help, and I hope someone will be kind enough to point me in a direction.  After many months (years) of hemming and hawwing I finally decided I would by a .300 Whisper T/C Contender pistol barrel.  Well, it seems my timing leaves alot to be desired, as the availability of loaded ammo has dried up.

Question:  Does anyone know of a source of loaded, and/or primed formed cases?  Heck, even formed cases right now.

I have tried to researched this subject on the web, and thought I might have found a source in the name of Keith Davis, but I have not gotten any response to my email.

Yup Ron might load for it or have cases, dunno. So might SSK as JD is after all the parent of it. Now for sure the ammo he sells is NOT cheap but it is good stuff.

You can get brass from http://www.coyoteguns.com/once_fire_brass.htm. They use 221 fireball and the price is reasonable.
I believe Cor-Bon still makes 300 Whisper ammo.
It is dirt simple to make 300 Whisper brass from 223 cases if you feel up to it, have never experienced a problem although you can read about sticking case necks I have not.

As a side note, if your Contender barrel is a 1:10 twist, you may have problems stabilizing 200 and 220 and 240 bullets.
This problem seems -pardon the pun- hit or miss. My rifle is 1:8 and it handles up to 240 and maybe heavier with ease but I do get occassional "keyholing" with similar bullets from the Contender barrel.

Hi All,  Thank you for your responses.  I have been in touch with Ron Reed, and looks like I'll be in good shape. 

FYI, I have talked with the folks at DakotaArms/Corbon and they told me that the 300 Whisper (300-221) is not going to be available from them until they can locate a manufacturer to replace their former source,  who has dedicated its line to producing .223 for the war effort.  They have agreed to keep my order "on backorder" until the find a source.

Regarding CNC, they will only ship to a FFL here in New York State.  Not really sure why they have taken this stand, as there are no restrictions on shipping ammo to upstate NY, New York City yes, but not upstate.

Ron, if you're reading this, Thank You for your support!  I am looking forward to receiving my order and shooting my new barrel.

Gary0529 - Yes, the TC barrel is a 1:10.  I have researched this cartridge, as best I can, on the internet, and above 200 grs. this barrel may not stabilize the bullets.  As my interest is hunting whitetails, I hoping the 150 gr. Ballistic Tips will do the job.  Ron has agreed to load up some rounds for me, so I'll know shortly.  I'll also give the website you've posted a try.  Thank You.

Does anyone have any experience with the available dies for the (300-221) currently on the market?  With Ron's brass, will I have to "Full Length" resize, or can I just "Neck Size"?

I see no reason why you can not neck size the brass once you have fired them in your chamber , its not like you will be shooting it in 3 or 4 diffrent chambers .

I have the Hornady die set in full lenght and a 30 cal neck sizer. As long as I keep the Contender brass separate from the rifle brass all is well.
I neck size the 221 fireball derived brass just because it costs more and is supposed to be "better" (don't ask me how or why-it is just what I read) and full lenght the homemade 223 stuff as I have an abundance of it and can resupply 223 brass from  the range at any time.
So far, I am up to 6 reloadings on the 221 stuff and no signs of fatigue or neck splits, then again, I mostly shoot subsonic low pressure rounds.

htrjv:  the 30-06 has a 1:10 twist and stabalizes 200 and 220 - 250 (Barnes) bullets just fine.  Granted that the velocities are better than what you will get from the whimper, er sorry, whisper but you should be able to shoot the 200 gn slugs accurately. 

I decided I want to shoot a whimper, er sorry, whisper caliber.  I like the 30 Whisper, the whisper version of the 7.62x25mm pistol cartridge.  The whisper folk tell me they 'believe' that cartridge will shoot a 200 gn slug just fine - we'll see. 

Me - I'm going to order a 7.62x25mm chamber adapter from MCA Sports/Ace Dube - he has made these for me before and continues to make chamber adapters and the like.  My intended brother in law sent me some 200 gn cast slugs for his 06 that didn't shoot so accurately in his rifle so I am going to try them at whimper velocities and see if I can stuff enough powder in the case to get them out to the 50 yd line.  It should be a fun shoot.  Mikey.
