Buy new or used .223 Ultra?
« on: February 16, 2007, 11:31:54 AM »
Got a lead on a 2002 (ser# HSxxx)ejector model .223 24" bull with brown laminate(not plywood) stock set. With all delivery and ffl fees I would have $235 in it. Would I be better off buying new so I would get the latest twist rate barrel and an extractor model? (I'll be paper plinking mostly).

I read sometime back that Cabelas offered a substantial discount on a purchase if you open a credit card account with them,  but on their website it doesn't mention this in the section dealing with their Visa Cards. Has this been discontinued? I was thinking that might be one way to buy new, but really haven't kept up on the prices.

Any thoughts on this? The used rifle looks to be in great condition from what I can tell from the pics. Thanks

The discount was only an in store thing, I think, so you'd have to check in a store, or maybe call em.

Its a crap shoot as to what twist you will get with a new one , the flutted should be a 1-9 , but most of the others are 1-12 like the old ones , and from what i hear the 1-9s don't shoot the 65+ grain bullets any better than the 1-12s do . I happen to like the ejectors better than the extractors even for plunking at the range , thats me though .

235.00 for a used Handi seems a little steep unless it comes with a scope , i can get NEW 223 BBs for 209.00 + tax here and passed on a nice used with Curly Maple stocks and a 3x9 scope for 225.00 a month ago .

But the choice is yours , just some info to help con-fuzzel you more .  ;)

Ditto to that question. I've got a lead on a new .223 ultra for 260. I'm torn, I was really looking for a used one for under 200 or new for about 200. is it worth ponying up for an ultra? I know the stocks are nicer, but I was going to sand them down to fit the gun either way.

I called Cabelas and a $30 discount is issued for a husband and wife credit card account that is approved that day in store.

The used rifle is $190 and is a state away from me. Shipping and ins. is $15 and my smith gets $30 to do a transfer and is the only one around that will do so from a private individual and was ok'd to do so by the Alphabet Agency according to him.

All in all the fees and shipping bring it to $235

I have been looking for awhile but nothing has come up locally. I have Cabelas looking for a new one now and they will get back to me by tomorrow.

Stimpy, I was thinking the extractor would cure the rimless stuck case problems, and as I'm not going to hunt with this rifle for the most part it should not matter.

I guess I could purchase a used handi and then sell the barrel on the classified and send it in for a bull barrel, but then there would be fees and shipping. Then again I have to watch it or I could be then considered to be suffering from mental disease and defect like the rest of you guys :o

I wouldn't look for an extractor barrel just to avoid stuck brass, that problem is easily cured without a lot of work, mostly just a clean, polished chamber and no hot loads. ;) If you end up with a first generation extractor, you may have more problems than stuck brass as they have a history of failing and is the reason there is a 2nd gen!! If you can get the 2nd gen extractor, it would be better. You can see the difference tween em in the FAQs.
