Long Range Encore?
« on: February 16, 2007, 05:00:51 PM »
I was wondering if any one has tried shooting long range with a encore (400-600 yrds)?  I want a 7mm rem mag capable of the 4-600 yrd range for  hunting powerlines.  I know a bolt action will to it with some practice.  Will a Encore with a MGM barrel be capable?  Or does the break open desing of the encore limit to shorter ranges?  i have a encore w/ a 209x50 and a 204 ruger barrels and am impressed so far.  I woild rather spend the money on a encore than a bolt custom.  Any info or opinions would be appreciated.
thanks.

The furthest I shot my 300 Win Mag Encore barrel was 300 yards. It was very accurate at that distance. The only way to know if your particular barrel will be accurate enough at that distance is to shot it at that distance. You will have to put in some range time and load development to make it happen.

I nailed a deer at around 425 yards (GPS measured) with my Encore in 7mm Rem. Mag. and took another at 360 yards with my Encore in 22-250; is that far enough?

The 22-250 and 7mm Rem. Mag. will both do between 0.5 and 1 MOA with the right loads.  These are both factory barrels.  If I invested in a custom barrel, I might do even better.

Most factory rifles can be tuned to produce the necessary amount of accuracy for shots in the 400 yd range, but the 600 yd range is another story.  Encores CAN produce top-notch accuracy.  I'd go with a custom heavy barrel from MGM if you want to use the Encore, vs a factory barrel.  I would also get another frame, and leave the barrel on it, I wouldn't switch back and forth.  Get a trigger job that takes it down to the 2lb range too.  That would take one more variable out of the picture.  I would demand that the rifle I use for shots like that to produce .5 MOA at 100 yds, but I would shoot it out to 600 yds to see how it groups at that range (if you want to shoot that long).  It would have to shoot less than 6" at 600 yds for me to take a shot like that.  If you don't reload, you'll have to start, more than likely.  All the shooters I know and read about that shoot at long range reload their own, and they weigh cases, bullets, etc, to get the most consistency that they can.  Once you go past 400 yds, there are so many variables that come into play......the biggest being YOU.  If you can't/won't spend the time and money to practice shooting at that range (from field positions, not a bench) with a 7 Mag, then don't hunt at that range with it.

Yeah, you can practice at long range with a varmint gun, but that doesn't replace shooting the actual gun you plan on hunting with.  Also, if you are hunting out of a treestand, forget shooting 600 yds.  With the exception of what was basically a tree house built in a huge old oak tree (it was about 5 feet thick at the base), I've never been is a stand that provided enough stability to shoot that long whether it was a permanent stand, ladder stand, etc.

One of my buds just built a .338 ultra mag pro hunter. MGM barrel with muzzle break, MGM trigger job, forarm bedded and a 4.5x14 Leupold vxIII. With custom loads he is almost .5 MOA. This gun (or one like it) should easily accomplish a .600 yd shot......... that is if the shooter can! By the way it is a sweet rifle.

Wind doping comes into play at 600 yards. If there is enough wind to fly a kite and you do not adjust for it, hitting a deer size target is not going to happen at 600 yards.

Thanks for the info.  I either going to do a mgm barrel, or rebarrel my rem 700 to a 7mm and and have the bolt opened up to a magnum boltface and sako extractor.   Anyone have a mgm 7mm rem mag and have recomendations on lenth or barrel and ammo?

182A.     I hope to know in the next few weeks how much accuracy you can get out of one of these rigs.  I am building up a 6.5X284  custom barrel.  Hangar bar, trigger job, warne bases,  Nightforce 5.5X22X50  30mm.   Lapua brass ,  142 SMK's.  Have just shot some fireforming rds @ 100.   Putting  3 or 4 into one hole but throwing out 1 about a half inch.  Going to ladder test @ 300 yds this weekend if the wind gets under 10mph.  Has been about 30 to 40 sofar.  I have gongs @ 450 and 600.

Okiecat that is funny.  I just received my custom 6.5X284 barrel for my Encore.  I have a left handed thumbhole stock for it.  The action is at the smith having a trigger job.   I have been reading alot to try and determine what to do with the forearm.

I am going to try some N-165 powder and Scenar bullets for mine.  I am trying to put a long range ground hog gun together.  Good luck with yours.  Tom.

And the question that inquiring minds would like answered.....

Where do you get a tag for powerlines :o  I've always wanted to hunt them, but I thought they would bite back in a big way, and if I only wounded them, a power company might run me down.  I guess I'm wrong, let me know ASAP so I can work them in next season!

Sorry, I couldn't resist.   :P
