Can you put a vernier sight on a Ruger no. 1?  I'm guessing the answer is no because of the tang safety but if I'm wrong someone please let me know.  I'd like to get one in 45-70 someday and shoot it without a scope. (I'd buy a Sharps or something similar but my wife has sworn I'll never get to spend near $2000 on one gun)  Is there anyone who makes front sights for Ruger no 1's?

I'm not sure if Marbles makes one for the No.1, but they do make tang sights for the tang safetied Miroku made Winchesters and Brownings.

Another option is New England Custom Guns peep sight that attaches to dovetails that are cut into the quarter rib (where the rear scope ring is usually attached).  The front sight beaded post may need to changed out with one of NECG's manufacture to get to work right for you, though.  If you plan on using heavy 45/70 loads, a tang mounted sight may not be appropriate as they do have some stiff recoil.

yes you can put a tang sight on the Ruger #1. Most the schuetzen shooters I know (who use Rugers) use a tang sight, but you need to remove the tang safety, and drill-tap for the tang sight.
 I have a friend who is selling his Ruger #1 and it is already setup with a MVA mid range tang sight. It's not a .45-70, but a .32-40 Badger barrel, with a spirit level globe front sight too. Great 200 yd gun!

Hi....
       for what it worth, I have a Williams peep on my #1 in 45-70, also have one on a #1-a in 06....makes a nice setup in my opinion anyway...
Ruger also sells different front sight heights...I couldnt figgure why my 45-70 with everything adjusted for max height was still shooting 8" low at 40 yards....DUH.....someone had put the wrong front sight on it...seems I have seen at least 3 different heights on different rifles....hope this is of some help....Rob

A gentleman by the name of Roger Clouser authored a good article in Nov. or Dec 02 in a magazine called The accurate rifle on how he put a tang sight on his no1 in 243.
 He done a most proffesional looking job and wrote an excellent article on iron sights on the no1's. It was a two part series with one month being about the tang sighted 243 and the next month about a lyman receiver sight modification on a no1 in 45-70.
 The magazine is a sister publication of Precision Shooting the benchrest magazine, In my opinion they are the very best shoot mags out there for technical stuff on the cutting edge. JS

I have a new stainless steel Ruger #1 in 45-70.  I took the original sights off and installed a replacement from Brownell's that is adjustable for both windage and elevation.  Simple replacement.  Works beautifully.  Cost about $65.  I've also got two other Rugers, both bolt action stainless steel guns.  One in 44 Magnum and the other in 30-06.  I've ordered replacement rear sights for both.
