Author Topic: Pallet wood stock material? (Read 1054 times)

Can someone please tell me what type of wood the pallet wood stocks are made of. I have a monte carlo buttstock that I have sanded down and stained a green color. I want to make a manlicher type forearm in my woodshop, but need to know what type of material to come up with to make the matching easier.

I agree with Dave, of the stocks I have seen and worked on my best guess would be they use mostly beech and occaisonally may have used birch for the "pallet wood" stocks....<><....

I just sanded one down. It looked like the buttstock was maple, the forend looked like poplur or beech

I just sanded one down to refinish two weeks ago. I wasn't real sure what kind of wood it was but beech would have been my guess at the time.

My guess is all of the above as the factory probably has a spec they want met and it goes out on bids as number 1 and better misc hardwood of various species.

Mine all look like popular ( or however it is spelled).Wrong compression zones for beech on the ones I have.

If it was Popular it would proabably have green streaks or at least a green tint in some places. I have seen some pictures of them sanded and my guess would be Beech or may be Birch but I would bet it would most likley be Beech. I really do not think it is Maple.

IF it's Popular, there'd be much more of it. hehehe!!

You could sand it down and see what it looks like.

Don't seem logical they'd make the butt and forearm of two different species, or does it?
They've cut corners a lot of place's, Tim, would they do it that way too?

There have been reported laminated pallet wood butts with plain forends or vice versa, so I think they could mess up in the factory real easy and mix a stock set of just about any kind. They do make maple stock sets, I have a curly maple set.

By the way, Dale of DALESCARPENTRY fame, I sopke with the guy I got that wood from , he says it is rosewood, I told him I thought it looked like a real dense and hard mahogany and he said he also tought it might be at first but when he gut a piece he (and his friends) determined in thier collective wisdom that it is rosewood. He builds post and beam log homes on the side and is a licensed contractor so he has some familiararity woth wood, for what it's worth. I'll send it out as soon as I return from Maine at the end of the week, Thanks....<><....
