Barnes Copper and Nosler Partition
« on: February 17, 2007, 01:26:19 PM »
These are two bullets that have never grouped well for me.  Has anyone else experienced my frustration with either of these?

Nosler BT is among the best grouping bullets I've used.  Go figure.

I have no experience with the Barnes bullet but I've shot several tons of NP's in several different calibres.  It's not gonna give you match grade bullet accuracy but I've never had a problem with the accuracy I did get from them.  My two go-two bullets are NP's and Speer Grand Slams.  Whichever one the rifle shot the best.

I shoot a Partition in my 338 Win Mag Browning BAR.  It will consistently shoot two (2) shots at 100 yard around 3/4 of an inch.  That's plenty accurate for a big game hunting rifle.

I've found the Barnes all copper to be finicky.  A gun will either love the bullet or absolutely hate the bullet.  However, the newer Barnes bullets with cannelures are another story alltogether.  Most guns will love these Triple Shock and MRX bullets.  If you're looking for a 308 caliber bullet, then try the new Barnes MRX.  I guarantee you'll be pleasantly surprised!

I've never had a problem with Nosler PTs and have NEVER seen a decent group with Barnes bullets. I've shot many hundreds of nice tight groups from 1.25" to as tiny as 0.25" at 100 yards with PTs in several chambers and different rifles and TC handguns. But I don't think I've ever seen a group under 2" with Barnes bullets and most average well over 4" with some not even keeping all on an 8.5"x11" target sheet they spread so wide.

My 165 Nosler BT's and my 165 Nosler Partitions drop into the same 1" group or less out of my M70 Classic FWT .30-06, 57 gr. IMR 4350.

My experience is the opposite from most of yours, I have never shot partitions but I shoot Barnes TSX in 7mm-08, 300 mag, 270 win and 270wsm. basicaly anything I shoot Elk with, and in all of these guns TSX was the best grouper of all I tried. You do have to load them from 50 to 100 thousand off the lands, I dont know why but they like to jump. which is great because that makes them easier to get in the magazine. I dont buy them for deer, antelope or coyote guns because I cant afford to practice with them. Last years 270 wsm took an elk at 250 yards and I recovered the TSx on the opposite side against the hide. It was 140 gr and afterwards it was a 137 gr. So I guess except for the price I am a fan of Barnes. I also have no more fouling than with any other.

Thats some darn fine shooting there Quick!Like GB,the nosler partition has shot so well for me and performed so well on game, that I never felt a need to even try the barnes. In my 06 the 150gr shoots half inch,165 are 3/4 inch. The 150gr accubond looks likes Quicks 200gr pt group, right at .40,and that was with 2nds !
So after years of shooting pt.I tried the accubond on deer last fall,so far I'm impressed and have bought a bunch before price jumped up.

I've had OK accuracy with Nosler Partition bullets and excellent accuracy with Barnes bullets.  Most recently I tried some of the new Barnes Banded Spitzer Solids in my 30/06.  I fired 2 three shot groups at 100 yards.  One group was a little less than 0.5 inches and the other a little over 0.5 inches.  The best part is that the point of impact is essential the same as with the same weight Barnes Triple Shock X-Bullets.  I get about 1 MOA with the Barnes Triple Shocks in the same gun.

I didn't have good success with Barnes bullets until I started loading them a bit further from the lands than I did other bullets.  Also, I don't have a problem with them fouling the barrel.

I have never loaded Barnes bullets, but I loaded some Partitions for a .243 this past deer season. Without any load work up to speak of, I had 3 shot groups around 1". I have 20 loaded with different charges and powders, I'm sure I can drop that into the .6 or .7" range.
