Mowrey Muzzleloader
« on: February 18, 2007, 07:06:43 AM »
I inherited a Mowrey Muzzleloader that has a 30" browned barrel that is 1" across the flats, 50 Caliber, 1 in 30, two piece stock, brown steel furniture, with crescent butt plate and 4 digit sn.  Does anyone know anything about these rifles they can tell me? How much is it worth? It appears to be in very good condition with a good bore.

Track of the Wolf has sold 4 or 5 Mowrey rifles between 2003-2006, 36 to 54 CAL. They went from $299 to $399 depending on grade of wood and condition.  These were for the steel receiver models.  I saw 1 brass receiver model in  54cal  that went for $189.

Deer Creek Products handles the Mowery.  They have a web site but not much on it.

I have a Mowery Squirrel Rifle and it's supurbly accurate.  Quite a bit of drop at the wrist on the Mowery's but not a problem once you get used to it.  I like mine.  I've killed a ton of squirrels with it.

You mention 1-30.  Is that the twist you're talking about?  Seems pretty fast for a Mowery unless they've started marketing conical twist barrels.

What I have found out so far! Mowrey Gun Works in Waldron Ind. is no longer in existence and apparently sold out to Deer Creek, who hasn't done much with them, and I have been unable to find a website for them. Prior to Mowrey Gun Works going out of business, they sold several different rifles of this type including squirrel rifles of .32,36, and 45 cal.with 13/16"x28" barrel, a 40 cal silhouette rifle with a 13/16"x32" barrel, a plains rifle in 50 or 54 cal.1"x32", and a Rocky Mtn. Hunter in 50 or 54 cal, 1"x28". All the preceding rifles had a 1-66 gain twist. The rifle I have is a 1n30 conical made in 45, 50, or 54, mine is a 50 with a 1'x28' barrel. The 1n30 Conicals were all made with browned steel, while the others were available in brass or steel. They also made 28 and 12 gauge shotguns in brass or streel. Wouldn't I like to find a 28 gauge! The wood was always curley maple. The fellow that sent me the most of this info also sent me a picture of a brass 45 squirrel rifle he owned that was an exceedingly handsome piece.

Any more information would be greatly appreciated!

I have a short barrelled 58 caliber tree rifle that was early made.  It does shoot well.  It had the old style tumbler in it which I changed to the newer style after I bought it.

I believe that the Mowrey was originally made in Texas and a find shooting rifle.  The company changed hands several times, and ended up with Deer Creek Products in Waldron.  They don't have a web site, phone number is (765) 525-6181.  They also picked up the barrel making equipment from Douglas when they quit making B.P. barrels.  I understand that they are every bit as good as Green Mountain barrels.  The folks at Deer Creek are real friendly.  Call them and ask for their catalog.  They sell a CVA mountain rifle clone, and also picked up the Hopkins & Allen underhammer line.
