OK I got my first 300 RUM.
« on: February 18, 2007, 08:14:38 AM »
Well I was at the gun shop today, and I picked up A Savage Model 111 in 300 RUM.  I just ordered a set of die's and cases to reload. I got a great deal on the gun so I thought I would give it a try to see what everyone is so excited about.  I needed it like I need a hole in my head. I already have a Tikka 300 Win mag and a Browning A-bolt in 338 win mag. Next is what scope to put on this thing!

"Next is what scope to put on this thing!"

Let me guess ...... a Leupold?  :-\

I hope it's a shooter as most Savages are.

Redhawk, good luck with your RUM & I am looking forward to a range report. More and more I am hearing about very accurate Savages. I know of no commercial cartridges that runs with the 300RUM at a distance under 338 Lapua/338RUM. It is hard to argue with a 200 Accubond with a BC of 577 @3,200fps in downrange energy & wind drift. I am content for now with my 300WM Sendero, as it will push them to allmost 3,050, but if my barrel burns out I will probably put a 300RUM Lilja on it.

Redhawk1 I put a Burris 4X16 Bplex scope on my 300 RUM it has a wide mouth also. It also has marks for ranges up to 600 yds. With my 300 RUM I made one shot right to the bulls eye at 600 yds. Its also the rifle I used to kill my Black Bear.

As soon as I get my brass and die's I am going to load it up and head to the range. I will give a range report for sure. I installed the Leupold 3X9X50 on the RUM. I will se how I like it.  ;D

I have a cousin who had a Rem 700 in the RUM and he really liked the accuracy and power but he said that after a while the recoil got to him.

I loaded twenty 220 grain Hornady RN for him and he liked them better than the Factory load!
"Less brutal" was his words.

When you go to reload your ammo, you'll see that there isn't much room to spare in your press.
At least there isn't much in my RockChucker.

Hope you have fun with your RUM, it's a real power-house!

Chuck, I have a big RCBS press that I loaded the 50 BMG with, so I have plenty of room. I load for my 416 Rigby also with it. It is a big press and I like it better than them smaller presses.

Redhawk,
Be sure to takw a cleaning kit with ya to the range. My youngun has the 7mm and 300 in the Rem. These things get dirty QUICK ! Accuracy is his goes down hill after 5 slow shots. Barrels on these get hot pretty quick also. Enjoy the experience.

I always carry a field kit when I go to the range, I never know what's going to happen so I am always prepared.

Mine never lost accuracy with 30 rounds threw it but then again it is a Remington 700 action. I have no use for Savage. I had alot of trouble with one when I first bought it.

RedHawk1, what bullet are you going to shoot.
My 300rum(sendero) really likes the 200 Accubonds over 92.5grs of RL25
Good luck,DM

I have a bunch of the 165 gr. Barnes TSX bullets, I was going to try. They shot very good in my Tikka 300 Win Mag.  But I am open to other bullets.

REdhawk,
Would be interested to know how those 165 Barnes TSX work for you.  I hear a lot of good things about them.  Congrats on your new gun.

Most of what I have read and found is that the 300rum is best with the 180-200 class bullets. But ya never know. I bet a  165 will come out screamin if it will maintain good. Most bigger cal have better down range performance with the heavier bullets. I use to be one of the ones that just looked at MV,then I learned to look at 300+ ballistics. That's where the story is told. What's the old saying- It's not how ya start, it's how ya finish.

Good luck, DM

PS- If you try the 200 AB, most have found the best accuracy between 3100 and 3200 fps with several differant powders. RL25, Retumbo, H1000 seem to be the powders where most people land.

Cement Man, I will let you know how they work.

dancoman, I want to just try the 165 seeing's how I have 4 boxes on my reloading bench, I may jump up to a heavier bullets if I don't get good results.
If I can get the 300 Rum to shoot as good as my Tikka 300 WM I will sell the Tikka.  I am also playing with my Browning A-bolt in 338 Win Mag. I don't know why I needed another round in the 300 to 338 range. I guess, I just like to play with different rounds.

Redhawk,
I put a VXIII 4.5-14x50 on mine.  Let us know how the 165s shoot, I have a box of Vmax loaded with Retumbo sitting ready to be shot but haven't got around to it yet. Waiting for a calm day!

Redhawk, I saw on the prem. bullet thread where you were getting sub MOA  out of your 300rum.

Details Please on the load you found.

Thanks, DM

With the 300 Rum, I am getting MOA at 100 yards, not sub MOA. Here is my load I found that works well with the gun in a sandbag rest. It is in the middle range from my Barnes Manual.

165 gr. Barnes XLC bullets over 90.0 gr's of R22 OAL is 3.600.

Thanks for reminding me to post that info.

RH, Do you know what the MV is for that load.

With my 300rum sendero I'm shooting 92.5 RL25 with 200gr AB at about 3150fps. Last two 3 shot groups at 300 where under 1.25''. That's shooting out of a lead sled. Best 100.00 I've spent.

dancoman, I don't know the actual velocity, I did not have access to a chronograph. But the book lists it in the 3300 fps.
