« on: February 18, 2007, 12:24:38 PM »
Would like to rebarrel my Model 7 to 308 win with a heavier barrel of about 22". Can this be done and if so, what barrel manufactured/installer would you guys recommend. Would love to get this thing to shoot 1/2" moa or better. Suggestions or comments welcomed. Thanks is advance....... ;D

You can spend a lot more money for a barrel but I've had very good luck with Douglas barrels.  In price and service.  They say they don't make "benchrest" barrels, just d**n good barrels. And they do.  A fellow would have to be a lot better shot than me to tell the difference.  ;)
I have always bought the barrels and had a local smith ream them and put them on the action. That has worked out well for me. I  just like being about to look a fellow in the eye when I stop by his shop and ask him how things are going.   ;D

If you want consistant  1/2 moa 5-shot groups the barrel is only part of the equation.  A good 'smith is essential, and he can provide good recommendations on barrels, etc.   I've had very good accuracy with Hart, Lilja and Jarrett barrels, but these can be costly.  But then good stainless barrels are more costly because they are more difficult to machine with a dimensionally consistant, smooth finish in the bore.

When rebarreling, consider having the front of the action trued, the bolt face trued, the bolt lugs lapped, and the action pillar bedded into the stock.  These extra steps help to insure that your shooting skills will be the limiting factor on accuracy - not the rifle.  Good Luck, and have fun!

Like lonestar said you really want a good riflesmith working on your gun as there are many varibles that go into a consistant 1/2" rifle. I'm not sure where you're located but if you're anywhere near Miss. give Tim Thompson a call @ (662) 398-5001. He can build you whatever you want. :)
