629 sight
« on: February 19, 2007, 01:35:05 PM »
Is the front sight on the 629 interchangeable, meaning that it can be replaced with a fiber optics sight?  Also, can this be done relatively easily like my SRH, or is it a pain to do?  Thanks.

I guess it depends on which 629 you have. Is it a 629, 629-3, -4, -5.
Is it by chance a 629 Classic with the full underlug?
Most can be changed one way or another. The Classic has a hole in the front of the sight ramp as seen from the front. It comes out real easy by pushing the blade backward and lifting it out, front first. Other sights are pinned in which requires pin removal, drill the new sight and repin.

I don't know about the regular Classic, but the Classic with the HiViz sight is not one of the easy to change ones. It's pinned in just like the other guns.

How durable are those fiber optic sights SW puts on their PD revolver series and a few others?  They look real vulnerable to me.  I can imagine whacking the sight on something in a tight situation and being in a bind.

Anybody with some experience along these lines?

For SD work I'm thinking about Crimson Trace grips.  Love them on my Ruger SP 101.

I have fiber optic sights on almost all of my guns with open sights. But all but one of my guns are used for hunting. Then again....when I hunt, it's not exactely a walk in the park.....if you want to see "tight situations" follow me for a day thru some of the places I go. Frozen trees, ground and rocks are not very forgiving.

I don't know of any fiber optic sight, either Smith factory, Williams fire sight aftermarket, Thompson Center, or those that I have had machined and I installed the optic material myself that are not somehow vunerable to being damaged if hit just right given the correct circumstance.

But then, Crimson Trace grips are only as good as the battery and the electronic connection the battery is connected to. And a good whack or drop can undo that.

If the situation is that "tight", I'm probably not lookin at the ramp sight anyway.
