Question about see-thur rings

Hi, I want to put see-thur rings on my Remington autoloader, I want to use iron-sights for close shot and scope for long shot but I am abit concern about see-thur rings might affect the scope sight-in difficult? Does anyone have one on it? problem? I want everything done on my rifle before i go to college.

Rather than go with see-thru mounts, why don't you consider a quick-detachable system?  I tried the see-thru's before, as it seems like a good idea, but I never ever looked through them to use the open sights.  Why should I, if the scope it there?  It will be more accurate at any range, and easier to shoot too.  Also, the rings are very high, and you'll have to take your cheek off of the stock to look through the scope, and that doesn't contribute to good shooting.  If you plan on using the iron sights as back-up, or just want to hunt with the irons, you'd be better off just taking the scope off the gun and putting it in your pack.

I had see through rings on my 760 for several years because I had a cheap scope and I didn't trust it. I never used the iron sights hunting. If you really feel the need for iron sights I'd get the QD type rings.

I'm not fond of see thru rings, they tend to have your cheek way to high off the stock when sighting through the scope, which affects accuracy. If your auto loader is a 740, or 742, you could look for a set of Weaver pivot rings and base(they're not manufactured anymore) on ebay, the base you want is Weaver # 162. If it's a 7400, you're out of luck, Weaver didn't make a pivot base for the 7400 so your only 2 options would be see thru or QD rings. If you're bent on trying see thru, and you have a 7400, don't buy them, I have a set I got on a used 7400, and I'll never use them, I'll ship them to you if you want to try them, but I think, like me, you'll take them right off and never use them. Let me know.

As you know, in another thread, -- "looking for a weaver #162 base for a 760? -- we discussed the Weaver #162 Pivot Mount Base and Rings for the Remington 760.  You gave a source of parts (Gun Accessories) that didn't pan out (not your fault) but they did list a Weaver #193 Pivot Mount Base.  That got me thinking and I looked at some of my old Brownells catalogs and in their Catalog # 56 for 2003 and 2004, they listed Weaver Pivot Bases and Pivot Rings.  One of the bases listed was #193 for a Remington 4, 6, 7400 and 7600.  I called them just on the off chance that they might still have some in stock but alas, they were completely sold out.  Anyway, the person I talked to handed me off to one of their gunsmith/customer service people who did in fact say that the Weaver #193 Pivot Base was for the Remington 4, 6, 7400 and 7600.  Brownells still list the base specifications at:

Anyway, not trying to be the know-it-all here.  Just passing along some info I came across.  I am going to start looking for a #193 Pivot base in my travels.  If I come across one, I'll let you know.  Might be a frustrating search but HEY!!!!!! it'll keep me out of the bars and off the streets.

I don't know how to sugar-coat this, and I don't want to sound offensive...My advice...Forget see through mounts....Buy a good quality scope and learn to use it....If you hunt heavy cover, go with a 1.5x4.5 or a 2x7x33...Or even a 3x9x40...any of these can be turned to their lowest setting and pick up on a deer quickly...In fact once you learn to use a scope you can pick up a deer quicker than with open sights...And when hunting in the woods you are able to see the openings that you need to shoot through to get the bullet into the vitals....

That is good to know, thanks for the tip, I was unaware such a base was made for a 7400/7600, as I had previously stated, the last spec sheet I had downladed from Weaver didn't show such. Well, now I guess I'll be hunting on ebay for a #193 base, as I have a 7400 in .308 with QD rings on it, but I'd much prefer a weaver pivot base, I even have an extra set of pivot rings. Thanks again for the insight and investigation on your part.

I was thinking that if I can't find a #193 pivot base that I could align a regular #93 base with one of the two #162 pivot bases that I now have and drill two holes into the #162 pivot base using the #93 base as a pattern so-to-speak thereby making a pivot base that would fit either a Remington 760 or a Remington 7600.  It should be easy to do and would make a good strong base for either rifle.  The front mounting holes are the same for both rifles.  It's the two rear holes that are differently spaced.  I've already aligned one of my #162 bases up with a spare #93 base that I have and have determined that it would be an easy thing to do.  You could do the same thing with the spare #162 base you mentioned that you have.

That's very good advice IMO.

Been there done that......got the tee shirt......

Pick either open sights or low mounted scope.....as with most things, when you try to get double duty out of them you don't get the best of either, but rather a compromise which leaves you with the best of neither.

 I literally have a small box full of old see thru rings that came off various rifles I had bought in the past.
 So as you can tell I have a rather low opinion of them. In fact I'll go so far as to state that a see thru ring is the crappiest scope mount system that mankind had yet devised.

My thoughts exactly. I put a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5 to 5 x on my 7600 and it stays on 1.5 99.9% of the time. There are few occasions where I don't like the scope and that's if you have to hunt day in and day out in the rain (as I did in Maine this past season) or day in and day out in wet sticky snow. This past season I was constantly wiping the lenses of my scope. Not a big deal if you get one or two rainy/wet snow days per season but it started to get to me after a week of it!

So what's the answer? Well, I picked up a 760 that I am in the process of mounting a peep sight to and that will be my "foul weather gun"; can't ever have enough pump guns IMO... ;)

Still, if I had to choose only one sighting system I'd still go with the best quality scope I could, mounted as low as I could, which, up until I picked up the 760 was my choice (and it has been a good one) since I made the commitment in 1991.

I never thought about quick-release, thanks for bringing it up and thanks for your advice. Now I am going to cabelas and do some shopping. 8)
