.221 Fireball Rifle?
« on: May 09, 2003, 08:15:13 AM »
Would like to have a barrel for my Contender Carbine to use as a walk-around pest rifle.  Something on the order of Hornet ballistics would be about right.  However, I'm turned off by the somewhat flimsy, old-fashioned Hornet case with the long shallow shoulder angle.

Had pretty much settled on ordering a .222 Rem. barrel from Fox Ridge and firing reduced loads, when I thought of the Fireball.  Seems like the smaller case would deliver Hornet ballistics with less powder and higher load density than a .222.  Might even be more accurate at Hornet velocities.  Fox Ridge will make one, brass & dies are available; what do you guys think?  Barrel length would probably 20 or 21 inches.

In all honesty, I may well opt for the .222 regardless...dies and cases are on hand.  However the thought of the Fireball in a rifle is interesting.  If it works out (or even if it doesn't), I might suddenly find I need a Super 14 Fireball...

Would be interested in hearing your experiences and thoughts on this.  Also would like to know if reloading the Fireball poses any particular problems.

Thanks.
Bob

Reloading the Fireball poses no problems.  Brass is readily available, as are load data and suitable bullets.  Hodgdon's new Li'l'Gun even gives it new life, though you seem to want to be on the lower end of its ballistic potential.  It's a strong case, and with mild loads you wouldn't need many cases to have a lifetime supply.  I have an 18" Fox Ridge barrel, and it sure makes up into a neat little carbine.  If you decide you're serious, let me know and I might part with it, saving you a wait.  I really like it, but I just have too many toys.  I'd think about seeing if I could stand to part with this one - don't know the answer for sure, though
