AA2230-C powder for the M1A
« on: February 22, 2007, 02:06:24 AM »
I just got a bunch of this, and really like it on 223 and 308 BOLT guns...My question is:  does anyone have any good loads for it and the M1A...will be using either 168 or 175 SMK's..I have always been a little conservative on the gas gun loads...thansk D451

The AA2230-C is a Military pull powder used in there gas op rifles and it is a good powder for the M1 Or M1-A and so is the AA 2230.
The 4895 powder is a Military powder that was designed for the gas op rifles, in my opinion it is the best for the M1 Grand and the M1-A.
Slow burning powder should be avoided for the M1 and M1-A it will spring the op rod and you will get cycled shots some times enough to empty a M 1 clip.
Powder with a burning rate on both sides of the AA2230-c AA2230, and 4895 should be avoided.

I won't comment on the .223, I have a SP-1 Colt but I haven't shot it or loaded enough for it to make a accurate comment on.
Dont go were the path leads,go were there is no path and leave a trail.

AA2230 with 168 grain BTHP bullet and 38.7 to 43.0 grains of powder.

with a 180 grain spitzer use 37.8 to 42 grains of powder.

My experience tells me that a 98% charge will be very close to the best accuracy.

Hodgdon, Lyman, Speer, Sierra, Hornady = reliable resources
so and so's pages on the internet = not reliable resources
Alway check loads you find on the internet against manuals.
NEVER exceed maximum listed loads.

I don't have an M1A, but I've worked with AA2230C a lot in 223, I really like it.

Here's a 5 shot group shot at 100 yards by my AR15.
