R&D conversion of 36 Rem to 38 Spl questions
« on: February 22, 2007, 05:41:14 AM »
I'm thinking of getting an R&d cylinder for my 36 Uberti Rem. I've got one for my Old Army and my Pietta Rem 44 and love them. But a .357 38 spl slug going down my .380 Uberti bore will require hollow base bullets. I've got no problem with that, but we're talking about a bump up of .023 to get the bullet to fill the grooves. Do any of you have any group-size data using a conversion cylinder and 38 spl hollow-base bullets.  I don't want to invest in the cylinder and reloading dies and molds if all I'm going to see at 25 yds are groups the size of a softball. Thanks for any info.

I shoot with 148gr HBWC bullets very often as a main match gun in SASS matches.  At CAS range they are as accurate as any 38.  At very long range, 50yd or beyond, they are not stable, as the rifling twist is too slow for the long bullet.  R&D will reline your barrel to 357 for a pretty reasonable price ($60.00), check their website.  If relined, however, it can't be fired cap & ball any more.

The .375 bore (+ or - ) is a concern. I finished a scratch built 51 Navy in .38 S&W a few years ago. Out to 25 yards it's OK, but just OK. When I say OK, it will hit a dinner plate four out of five times.

Beyond 25 yards it starts to keyhole, DUH!!!!

Who cares what it does beyond 75 feet?
