Berger VLD's for hunting?
« on: February 22, 2007, 07:58:38 AM »
I'm looking at the 115gr VLD's out of my 25-06.  I've heard you can push them to the 3100-3200fps range pretty easy in a 26" barrel.  We will see about that, but does anyone know how they do on game.  I hunt mulies, and shots are usually in the 150-350yrd range.  The high BC (.523) is what got me looking at them in the first place.  The Berger web site lists them as a match and a big game bullet so I guess they would be OK, but I wanted to check with you guys first.  Thanks, Brett

berger's are a bit pricey for hunting. What other bullets have you tried? In my 25-06 the regular old remington and hornady slugs work excellently. I did try some 110 grain bullets from Fowler that were erratically in terminal performance. Some times blowing thru a deer and some time blowing up on the outside of the rib cage. Range was NOT the deciding factor in the blow ups. I killed one 6pt buck at about 400 yards with a 120 grain at 3000 fps. One WELL RESTED shot from prone did the trick.

Too pricey?  At $27 per 100 they are cheaper then any other premium bullet.  The Nosler Accubonds that I shoot run about $20 for 50, and the TSX are $28 for 50.
