Open sight choice for hunting
« on: February 22, 2007, 12:40:46 PM »
I have a Ruger Blackhawk Hunter in 44 that currently wears a 2x6 Bushnell. I have shot a few deer with it and it is a great shooter with the scope. I would now like to take the next step and put a good set of open sights on it for deer hunting. I have tried the factory sights and do not like them so what do you guys reccomend? The load I shoot is a 325 cast bullet with 21.2 gr of H110.  Iwas looking at the Bowen Rough but am open to suggestions.

Try the One Ragged Hole sights. I have one on my SBH, and it's great.
I've shot many a sassy bandit with just my pistol!

I like express sights, gold bead w/ a v notch rear. I have them on all my open sighted guns.

best sight combination ive found on a single action ruger is a bowen rear sight and a clements front post blade narrowed to .10

My favorite open sights is the setup I have on my single-six.  I put a oneraggedhole sight on for the rear sight.  I took off my front sight and replaced it with a Williams shorty ramp for my barrel's diameter.  In the dovetail, I put the proper height 1/16th ivory bead.  Not only is this setup really quick to the target, it is really precise for me.

I have to agree with Lloyd's choice too. I have the rough country and the target sights by Bowen and I like both. The Clement's front sight post makes a big difference. This combination is just as good as the sights on my bullseye .45, nice a crisp. Way better than the factory sights.

One Ragged Hole is the only way to go, almost gave up pistol shooting as my eyes got older.  Had a hard time focusing on the front sight with progressive lens and the target and back sight totally fuzzed out.  Got the One Ragged Hole and shot some of the best groups of my life and that was with the larger aperture.  Took a nice buck with my GP100 and had no trouble staying on target even though it was walking at a good pace.

Most of the sights your advisers have mentioned are hard for me to see at dusk and dawn? How about a fiber optic?

fiber optic are a little to fragile for a hunting revolver. The reason i like the bowen rear clements .10 front is for low light. Ive tried colared insert sights and none of them add any real time to low light dusk and dawn shooting. What works is the abiltiy to see light between the front blade and the sides of the rear sight. A front sight that is thick and fills the rear notch is about useless in low light no matter what colar it is. Peep sights have allways been notorious for being poor in low light. They just dont allow enough light to enter the small apature.  Im having a redhawk 480 done by dustin linebaugh and its going to be the first hunting gun ive had set up with trinium night sights. I dont know how that will work out but ill keep everyone posted when its done. As most of you know im not a fan of optics on hand guns but low light gives them a big advantage.

Thanks Lloyd, I'll be watching for an update on the sights.
