the problem, as i see it , is trying to make the actor a real cowboy or thinking the actor has the character of a real cowboy. lets change the mix a little--maybe we could get a better fix on the subject by trying to identify a character in a movie which we think portrays a real cowboy.
i'm thinking of sellecks recent character--waynes character in the searcher as examples.

ps this could bring into the mix characters defined by actors.

Had a problem limiting my selections to actors in “Cowboy” roles, so my list represents actors I think really got into their movie character and did an outstanding job in “Western” type movies

Robert Duval in Lonesome Dove
Robert Redford in Jeremiah Johnson
All of the main characters in The Wild Bunch
Val Kilmer and Powers Booth in Tombstone
Ben Johnson in just about everything he did
Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven
Richard Farnsworth in The Grey Fox in particular, and in every other     movie I’ve seen him in
Alan Ladd and Jack Palance in Shane

There are many others, but I want to see what some of you have to offer.

For those of you who enjoy old “B” Westerns, you might like this site http://www.surfnetinc.com/chuck/magers.htm

Here are a few of the earlier ones that I liked when growing up.
William Boyd
Harry Cary Jr. and Sr.
Richard Boone
Tom Mix
Gary Cooper
Just to name a few. Don't want to take them all :)  This is in addition to the ones already named. I think that I may have dated myself

To add to the Ben Johnson list, World Champion PRCA Calf Roper, in other words I think we have described the only REAL cowboy in hollywood.....

I think a few of the old silent movie cowboy actors were the real thing.  Might be interesting to do a little research in that area.

Was that really williamlayton or an imposter?  Been so long since I heard anything out of him I thought he'd gone to that last roundup in the sky.

I think it must have been an imposter, but it was really hard to tell. He was here and gone so fast that I didn't see nothing but the wind blowing the leaves in the trees :-D

Now that you mention it, he can be pretty windy at times, kinda like a blue norther blowin' in.  Must be why I always start lookin' for my earmuffs when i know he's logged on.

I think they only let him out of the "home"* for short periods, and only when he's been good, so it may be a while before we hear from him again.  Probably also has to sneak time on the computer when the administrator isn't using it.
