Marlin Gone Under

I asked the fellow at the Gun counter at Bass Pro Shop last night why they don't carry any lever action rifles, and he informed me that Winchester and Marlin were out of business.  He did say the Henry Big Boy was still in production and was a better product. This came as quite a suprise.  ;D

I wouldn't be to quick to believe everything you hear.

While US Repeating arms did close the New Haven Conn. plant and halted production of 94's, 1300's and 70's, (back in April of 06) the rest of the Winchester line up is still available.  (such as the X2's)  Browning is set to manufacture under the Winchester name.  The 07 Winchester catalog is available in most gun stores.

Marlin, to my knowledge, is still in business and shipping rifles, and there are plenty available in the stores around here.

I have seen no announcement regarding Marlin.

The Sportsman's Warehouse here locally seems to have several different models of lever action Marlins, as well as plenty of bolt action rim fires.

Actually, Marlin is expanding it's line up of Lever actions with the introduction of the new .308 Marlin express.

I was joking.  I just bought a new Marlin.  I hate going into gun stores where the folks behind the counter know little or nothing about the products they sell.  Clearly whoever orders guns for this Bass Pro Shop just doesn't like leveractions so they don't carry them.

Sounds like he wanted you to buy a bolt action, along with rings, bases, a scope, 10 boxes of ammo to try...

I have never liked the gun section in bass pro. The 3 stores I have been in were an utter disappointment.

Yeah, Bass Pro is all about bolt actions and camo shotguns, at least the one in Cincinnati seems to be.  They have about a 6 foot section of pretty shotguns, about 12 of camo, then about 12 feet of bolt action centerfires, and then it's whatever else they have I guess.  Last time I was there, they had 4, yes 4, rimfire rifles on the rack--- Ruger 77/22, Remington 504, Kimber .22, and a Remington 597.  Yeah, no Marlins, no Savage, no economical choices but the 597.  They did have a new Marlin 336 and a couple of Guide Guns though.
