Cougar hunting.........

With a relatively new family my normal hunting routines are FINISHED for awhile. I live in an area and can get to areas full of big cats.  I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has successfully hunted these things.  I have run across more of them since our state banned hound hunting than I care to recall.......  I even ran over one with a police car doing 80 mph (guess what a cat the size of a great dane feels like going under your floorboard.....). They are EVERYWHERE. So, this will get me out of the house....

Predator call? Ghillie suit? Scents?  Thinking my bolt .223 or .270.....   maybe my M1A??  Second guy with a scatter gun???

I have seen one here in oklahoma that lives in a old barn where i deer hunt. I have tried calling him in time and time again with no luck. We cant kill them here but man i would love to see him come sneeking in at 15 yards.

Your 270 will just blow a huge hole in it and ruin a lot of meat.  Take your .223 and have at it, if you see them all the time just pick one and shoot it.  If you put a hole in it you will not have to worry about it eating you, it will try to run off.  Larry

I believe I would use the biggest gun at my disposal.  THe last comment about them running away if shot may be true, but i sure don't want to find out.  A gut shot cougar sounds like it could be a real fun experience.

I have taken 2 with hounds and my 7 mag,dont go undergunned if your not using dogs,you may have to make a long shot and who gives a darn about ruined meat on a cat?

I think going after that big of cat i would use the 270, i shot a bobcat that wheighed 15lb with a 223 at about  60 to 70 yards and it was trying to get up and take off and that was with a good boiler room shot so i am not sure i would try that big of cat with a 223 uless your going to tree the cat and get a head shot  and NO i have never been big cat hunting i just know i would use a bigger gun where my life could be on the line

WELL, You got real predator hunters and wanabee predators hunters. Ones that called in real lions and ones the wish they did. Where do you stand and could you prove what you're talking about? I wanna see pictures, show me, prove it... lol

Let me jump in here and make a statement, I don't have any pictures of my Lion kills but, Most people that know me will tell you i don't need to lie about anything when it comes to the hunting of anything, I have called Mt. Lions in and killed them, I have run dogs on Mt. Lions and have killed a mess of them. I Hunted Mt Lion & Bear in the Northern New Mexico Mountains for a good number of years and had good luck. I also hunted the Mountians of Arizona with some luck. It was a good life......Joe......

oso45-70, I'm playing with these guys. I've called in and killed a lion myself, one of my ex wives has the pictures to prove it . I've called in 8 lions over the years that I actually saw, how many others I have no idea. Again, I'm not calling anybody a real lier, I'm just playing with them trying to see if somebody has pictures, I thought it would be cool to see.

Looks like we have drifted away from your question a bit. Its kinda like the guy who asked what time it was, and was told how to build a Swiss Watch. If you have had experience calling any of the main Predators, Bob Cat, Coyote, Fox you go at it the same way. The main thing to remember is that a big cat comes in very slow and surveys his surroundings very carefully. Always watch your back door because they have a way of coming in the back door The Lion is alot like the Bob cat who may make a complete circle around you, All ways have your back covered by a buddy or some feature in the area you are calling from. A lion is not all that hard to kill so your 223 will do the job. When I was running dogs I used a 22 mag. convertable six Ruger to finish them off, But the shots were measured in feet not yards. Thanks for the input Joe. I'm house bound for a bit, but thinking another month or two and the kittens might be out too, so that will be a good time to get out and about.  I do have one friend that moved back and is very close that can go out anytime, so we'll likely do ghillie suits and use an electronic call to start.  Not sure what to do about scent though, but we'll figure something out.  Probably have me with a scattergun, some combination of buck and slugs, and have him with his Marlin lever......close to home here everything would be close in the dense NW forests and brushy areas.

I'm a wannabe. Been trying hard to call one in with no luck so far. Everybody around here use dogs. Have no problem getting 'yotes or bobcats. Bunches of lions here, evan come thru my back yard !
