45-70 Trapdoor load
« on: February 23, 2007, 02:42:24 PM »
I'm looking for a recipe that will get me 1450-1500fps with Remington 405gr bullets out of my 22" Handi rifle. I've got the one book/one caliber manual and a few others, but the info is very inconsistent.
I currently have IMR3031, IMR4198 and H4198 powders, but I'm not limited to using these, if there's something better I'll get it. I'm new to reloading and only reload for the 45-70, factory ammo seemed a little "soft", but on the other end of the spectrum the Buffalo bore was a little too much, I'm just looking for a happy medium.

Thanks, >>>===> Dave

Here are a few that work well for me .

38.0 gr. of IMR4198 @1620 fps

52.0 gr. of H335 @ 1685 fps this can go up to 57.0 gr. @ 1840 fps

51.5 gr. of IMR3031 @ 1795 fps

And as always your rifle and loads will tell you if the pressures are getting to high so start low and work up .

Be aware that there are three generally accepted pressure levels for the 45/70. A trapdoor should use the lowest pressure level. I shoot a 405gr LRNFP over 12 grains of Unique for a velocity around 1100fps. This is an acceptable pressure load for a trapdoor.

Better read Dave's post again, he's not shooting a trapdoor, just wants a trapdoor load. ;)

I been shooting an 1884 Trapdoor for years and would never run a smokeless powder load of 1450 to 1550 fps. through it.  Too many ifs on that caliber.  That would be more like a mid range load for any .45-70 in the Win 1886 category.

I don't like giving out loads over the internet and I especially wouldn't give out any load data under my name for the .45-70.   As a good rule of thumb I always tell people to go to the bullet or powder manufaturer's book.  You can even go to the websites of these companies for more updated info.  I have also been known to call up the company and get it from a tech.  But any info passed on over the net would be as wothless as a warm bucket of spit.

JMHO!!!      ;)

Just another voice in the crowd!!!

In a few cases i do give out load data over the net , and in this case i have a rifle just like his and the data can be confirmed by more than 1 powder / bullet company .

In most cases you are right to send them to the powder or bullet maker for info and let them chose what to use .
