I would think a 3x9x40 Nikon or a 3x9 Bushnell Banner would be a fine match.

I see on this forum, and other forums in USA that you all like the different kinds of Bushnell scopes. Here in Norway, everybody "has" to have either a Zeiss or some other kind of european scope. So the question is; are these less costly scopes worth what you pay for them?

This is just my opion but I do not think you have to pay $800.00 for a good scope. I see a couple scopes in the $600.00 range I would love to have but I could never afford it and I know that you can buy a scope for a couple hunderd bucks and be happy with it for the rest of your life.

There are good in between scopes like the Bushnell Elite 3200's that should be considered as they were Bausch& Lombe formerly ;D

I have a 3-9 VXII Leupold on my 22Jet.  I have used this outfit on prarie dogs and have no trouble seeing and hitting them at 175 yds.  Of course, PD hunting is most often done on fair weather days but I believe that the mid-range $$ scopes are plenty good enuff for a small CF 22 like the Hornet, Jet, Bee, etc.  After all 175 is about it for the Hornet, no?

Well I think they start at about $1000.00 here and even if they were the best in the world I will never own one unless I hit the lotery. Then I might think about spending that kind of money on a scope. Also if I could afford that type of scope I probably would not be putting it on a Handi I could afford any gun I wanted.

The only problem with the 3X9's is the thick duplex reticles. I like the reticles fine.

The Burris compact A/R 4-12x32 is fine with target turret, fine duplex, AO (from 7yards if you need to shoot near your feet).
Leupold 3-9x33 Rimfire, fine duplex, short range AO is fine too. I added stoney point turret on mine.

But, you said "fox". For what I know, they aren't easy and didn't appear in great light, you may need a light gatherer, 40~50 objective, good quality. A Meopta 7x50 will be fine (more light mean using an amplifier, sold mine because no AO). On the tactical way the Meopta 4-16x44 is really good, you may have use/fun of target turret and mildot for long range (22 hornet speaking) varminting.

You will notice, no high magnification level but  high optical, image quality are there.

Yes, high dollars/euros european scopes worth the money. Try to look thru Meopta or IOR, they cost less than Swaro or S&B but are great, if not too much for your use. The difference with low priced and lower quality is in your pleasure to use them (specially, each time conditions became difficult).

My Nef, 22Hornet
Old version, with Meopta 7x50.

Now, with Burris Compact R/A

I have a Bushnell Banner 4-12x40 ao on my Hornet.

Pro's - I like the size,it's fairly compact and don't consider a Hornet a bench gun but rather a walking gun.  The size allows good ballance.  It holds zero well, is cost effective and durable.  Price fits a handi well as I don't pay more for a scope than a rifle normally.  I don't like a big long scope on a hornet or rim mag and this scope is pretty compact.

Cons - Not very bright.  Contrast is so,so.  Not fully multi coated (although in that price range none are).  Dial up turrets are decent quality but not great.  Often wish I had a variable to 14 power or 16 power. No come up reticle.  I have a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14x42 on a CZ rim mag 17hmr, the differance in brightness, contrast, eye releif, magnification & quality are very noticeable..........but so is the price.

For fully multi coated brighter scopes with better contrast at a decent value Simmons & Swift are options but are over twice the cost of a Banner.  For value scopes some here also like the BSA.  I know AJ is mounting a BSA 16V with mil dot on his new Hornet and has several of them on Handis.  No complaints.

ooops,  one more.  The Nikon Buckmasters are very good scopes like the Burris Fullfield II's in that price range.  While I personally trust and pick Banners in that price range.  They are not in the same league as the Burris Fullfield II's or Nikon Buckmasters but again they cost much less.  I would put a Burris up against any European scope.

Call me goofy but here's the one I have:

http://www.natchezss.com/brand.cfm?contentID=productList&brand=SN&mfgGroup=472&subgroup=6756

It's the 6-24x50 model.  I love it for varmint shooting.  The optics are really great in all magnification levels.  I realize this is Simmons's lower line but there is zero recoil with that hornet.

I have just put a 3-9 banner on mine it has the circle-x reticle, I was thinking the circle could help them get on target faster when they are coyote hunting and the crosshairs look fine enough for gophers. Also since it's a trainer for my boys I wanted something without AO to keep it simpler.  Magnification is a little low for gophers but should match thier shooting skill for a while.

I find the brightness argument odd, personally I have never had one of my baners be too dim to shoot in legal (local rules for here are 30 min before and after sunrise and sunset) light.

I like a 2-7 on my hornets,I put a redfield widefield on mine many years ago and its a good match for the hornet.Makes it nice for a walkabout rifl which mine is,and on 2 power the widefield makes it nice for close range shooting.

Nice welcome, and lots of replies :D Thank you all. Will also be hunting grouse in the mountains, and a grouses head is a pretty small target at 100 meters. Thing i am going for a little bit more magnification than 9. Maybe 14.

No, I got your email. Thanks a bunch. Lots of interesting reading. Suddenly realised that I need a few more barrels ;D The article on the 500 S&W fired up my imagination :D In a Handi Rifle, this might even be leagal for big game hunting her in Norway. So thanks again :)

I wish I could check these out in person, but from the looks of it and everything I hear they are excellent optics.
Plus I believe it would be an excellent fit for a 22 Hornet. Light weight enough and an AO.
