Sorghum...good choice or bad?
« on: February 24, 2007, 12:21:50 AM »
I planted grain sorghum http://zipcodezoo.com/Plants/S/Sorghum_bicolor.asp for the first time last year.  My deer hunting partners from South Carolina use it to attract deer and turkey.  So I gave it a try.  The deer didn't eat it at all.

The bag said it would attain 48 inches in height.  It quit growing at 9.5 feet in height (photos posted on other links this site).  Next time, if there is one, I will try a variety that does not grow that tall.

The hogs enjoyed sleeping in it one night (thank you). I was about to drive the truck through it to knock down some shooting lanes.  My tree stands are only 12 feet tall.

I broadcast spread it around the edges and through the middle.  Made the mistake of overseeding.  It choked the clover and iron clay peas out of existence.

Don't overseed.  In fact, underseed a little bit, particularly when broadcasting by hand.  Lesson Learned.

I don't own a grain drill, but I am thinking hard about getting one.

I have had much the same results as you guys with Sorghum. Grows like crazy in lousy Florida soils. We mix it with wild bird seed, a couple of other varieties of millet, toss in some turnip and mustard greens and cowpeas. I have a 14' grain drill that does great. It was built by John Deere in 1948 and with some modifications and about $400, I was able to put it back to new condition. I had to replace several 12' gates with double 8 footers or take down fenceing temporarily to get it into some of the fields.

Sorghum: Never have seen a sign that the deer touch it though I have seen them in it. Cannot keep the turkey, quail and dove out of it once it seeds out. The cattle will level 100 acres of it in 3 days once they are turned into it but the birds continue to come in for weeks even after it is grazed over to the ground. By mixing it with millet and wild bird seed, we had a unbeleivable dove season once the migratory birds showed up this year. FWC kept checking us to see if we were baiting.
