Need input
« on: February 24, 2007, 05:15:11 AM »
New to forum. Have been giving some thought about .223 with 1-9 twist reaming to 5.6x50magnum, or 5.6x50RMagnum. This seems to be a longer .222 Magnum.
What are thoughts on this  ???

Welcome aboard!! ;) Finding a 1:9" twist barrel will be a little harder than you think, you'd have to physically check it before you buy it as there's no rhyme or reason to their production, a fluted barrel will have a good chance of being 1:9", but even it's been produced in 1:12". Can't help ya with that caliber, never heard of it, but lots here have rechambered Handis. ;D

FWIW, the .223 1:9" twist barrels won't shoot the heavier, longer bullets that the faster twist does in other rifles, there's a lot of speculation as to why, from shallow rifling to oversize bores, but their reputation for shooting heavier that 60gr bullets is disappointing, but they shoot the 40gr-55gr bullets very well in the .223, whether the heavier bullets would shooter better if pushed a lot faster remains to be seen. :-\

Pushing the bullets faster tends to increase the stability of the bullet all other things remaining the same but the destabilizing forces also increase with velocity. It's generally a wash. If the bullets are shooting 'slick' in the loose/shallow rifled barrels it is better to get a 1:12 and not spin the bullets any faster than necessary otherwise accuracy will be negatively affected. ;D

I think a good example of Mc's reasoning is the .22-250's standard rate of twist at 1:14". ;)

Quick,

Does that mean if I ream the 223 to 220 swift (wayne has this reamer & therefore cheaper)
& I push it then accuracy may fall off due to the 1/12 twist with bullet trying to spin t00 fast & slipping the rifling).  I don't think there is that much difference in velocity in the 22-250 & 220 swift ?? just trying to get things straight I think the recomended rifling for the swift is 1/14 I can't recall at the moment don't mean to hijack just thinking out loud & looking for answers to my ponders
That's my boy, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

GregP42 is having a .223 1:12 twist Handi rechambered to Swift right now, I'm sure he can answer that question better than I can.

Onehole,

The 1:12 is a normal twist for a swift, I will let everyone know how it shoots after I get it back from Wayne ;D

No...not really...if this were the case...you wouldn't be seeing much faster velocities for the 22-250 as compared to the 223..Read what Sierra says in their manual...(1:8 for the 60's & 80 grainers) The faster twist rate is for stabilizing heavier bullets with higher velocities...but not to drive the lighter bullet too fast to cause disintegration....

There will always be exceptions to the rule...some slower twist rifle doing well or better as compared to faster twist rifles..and if the 1:9 223's grooves will allow it...and there is no reason not to believe it won't...then I would say go for it...

My 22-250 with Shilen barrel is 1:14.5 and will not stabilize a 55 gr. Nosler BT(NBT) below 50 degreesF. It's fine at 70 degrees but it is only marginally stable. The NBT's  are very long for their weight. The upshot is I wish I had bought the the barrel in 1:12 instead. She'll push the 55's at 3800 fps with no pressure signs so it's kind of a shame to be stuck with the 1:14.5.
