smallbore silhouette rule clarification
« on: May 10, 2003, 10:16:12 AM »
I have a question regarding the hunting rifle class. The rule says that a barrel must be shorter than 30" and tapered. No bull or varment barrels. What exactly constitutes a bull or varment barrel. Should'nt any tapered barrel be ok. Most bull barrels are not tapered. I'm asking because at a recent NRA shoot a competitor tried to tell the officials that a heavy tapered barrel like on the Ruger VBZ should be disqualified as a hunting rifle even if it meets weight. I read the rules diffrently.

the most clear definition i have heard regarding taper is smaller on one end than the other.   easy to determine.  there are quite a few folks out there attempting to make this far more complicated than it need be.  also...  i believe the hunter barrel has to be 26" or shorter...  i think it is the standard rifle that is held to a 30" maximum.
