Corgi in woods?
« on: February 25, 2007, 03:22:18 AM »
I know the Corgi is the smallest of the herders, but I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the breed in the woods (as a hiking/scouting companion, or maybe for grouse, rabbits). They certainly were not bred for that purpose, and the dog would mainly be for companionship/house watching, but I was wondering how they handle the woods in general.

I had a Corgi/Red Heeler cross that looked like a red Corgi.  He was the greatest companion dog I've ever had.  He liked to snuffle around in the woods on our walks --keeping me in sight--but, as my wife put it, "he couldn't smell @#^!! with a nose full."  I think a kinder explaination is that he was breed to rely on his eyesight not his nose.  Fearless little dogs.  I had a black bear come along the creek that runs in front of my house.  I had some bee hives on our side so I sent Ottis to kinda help the bear along.  Ottis bayed him pretty good, staying respectfully on our side of the creek, and the bear stayed on his side and went on.  Had the bear crost over, I haven't a doubt but what Ottis would have tried him on. When we hunted in Wyoming, his job was to keep stock --we were on free range-- out of camp.  It was quite a sight to see he send a 2000# herd bull over the hill with it's tail in the air.
I don't guess I've done much to answer your question but I think they are champion little dogs.

Thanks, sounds encouraging. Especially the dog's tendency to stay within sight. I just heard a sad story about a cross country skier in western NY who had their two labs killed by coyotes when they were ahead of, but out of sight of the skier. And then one of the coyotes stuck around for a little while and eyed the skier. I've heard more and more stories about their increrasing boldness.

Good day to all, When I was younger me and the family went to some friends that lived a pretty good ways off. there not being any other kids around I was given a shotgun and told to go get some squirrels. I asked where a good place to go was and got told"just follow jim". looked around and there was this corgi cross that was the size of a full blooded corgi. The fellow said "gittim jim". Nothing but running and shooting for the next couple of hours. This was near Crossvile Tn. After that I wuld say a corgi wuld do well in the woods. Dont know what jim was crossed with but wuld say that corgis do good in the woods after that experience.....Bill
