Has anyone used these knives?  If so, how do you like the?.  I've gotten the catalogs for years, and have always debated getting one.  They seem to be the closest thing to the "perfect" hunting knife that I've found.  By hunting, I mean for cleaning and dressing game, and camp kitchen chores--not chopping down trees or prying open things.  They come in AUS-8, D-2, and VG-10 steels.  I've never used D-2 or VG-10 before.  I have several AUS-8 knives, I've used ATS-34 and some of the other stainless steels.

I'm also debating the Outdoor Edge "Hybrid Hunter" knife, as more of a multi-purpose knife for hiking and camping.  Anyone use one of these?  Or any of the Outdoor Edge brand?

Any feedback would be great!

Thanks

I have used the Bird and Trout extensively.  I like the slim blade.  Of course it's not a heavy bang on type of knife.  Holds a good edge and cuts well.  I also have a hunter but have not actually used it.  But it away as an extra to use someday and haven't got around to it yet.  I think they are both Aus-8.   Got a Bird and Trout for my brother as a gift, he does a fair amount of trout fishing but at the same time is prone to misplaceing things.   A good knife at a good price.

Taking that site indicated above and scroll down just a bit farther..to  THE WOODSWALKER.. I have been in the cutlery business on and of for years and have sold several of these.

They are a sweet handling little knife that does agreat job on many tasks..and the price is right and they carry very lightly.

The site listed has the knife alone @ $9.95  ...hard to find a decent knife anywhere for that price..

I have several of the Russel knives made by Grohman. They are great knives. I have one Outdoor edge but have not used it much yet.
shot placement is everything.

I have a A G Russell hunting knife i cant seem to id. it has a leather sheath, solid tang no hilt with stag grip panels, and a carbon steel blade. a drop point skinner. i cant find a picture of it on the AG Russell sight or on the Grumann sight but the sheath does resemble those on the Grumann kits.

Try checking on some of the old German suppliers..back when we could buy German stuff at a bargain price..could be where the knife came from.

How can they make a knife like that and sell it for ten bucks. A sane man could not pass that up, so I just bought 2 of them.

Sometime in the 60's I bought a knife from Herter's labeled Canadian Guide Knife.  This knife was patterned after the Grohmann, Russel design, the handle was more squared off, carbon steel blade, with a sheath that almost completely covered the knife handle.  I really liked it but had lent it to a crew member for fishing one season and never had it returned.  Sure wish I had it back.  It sharpened fairly easy, was just right for game and camp chores, and kept its edge very good.  I see them for bid on eBay occasionally and are generally sold for over $50 apiece.  I think I bought mine from Herter's for $8.  I'd recommend the Grohmann, Russel brand or a good copy like Herters to anyone for an overall hunting knife.
Greg lost his battle with cancer last week on April 2nd 2009. RIP Greg. We miss you.

I have the A G bird&trout in Vg10,and the woodswalker in aus8 steel, both are good little knives. The VG 10 steel holds up very good just like the spyderco knives I use with the same steel. The D2 would most likely hold an edge longer, but is more prone to staining, and rust if its not taken good care of.I've never had a problem with D2 rusting as I usually clean my knives as soon as I finish using them.I like smaller knives myself . usually a knife with no longer than a 3 1/2 inch blade will  cut anything I need to cut.If I need a big knife for chopping I'll borrow one my wife's old hickory's.

The woodswalker is a small knife, but perfect for kitchen like chores(ie) cutting up food for the table, and small cuttin chores.I ended up using mine for a paring knife. The aus8 doesn't stay sharp a long time, but is east to touch up,and is resistant to rust, and staining.I sometimes carry it in the little kydex neck sheath which holds it very securely.

My everday carry knife is a mini-manix from spyderco a great knife with excellent S30V steel.

I don't know how thick the blade is on the woodswalker but it looks like
what i like in the way of a skinning knife, if it handles like you all say it
does i will more than likely have to try one, at $10.00 maybe 3
I like a thin blade maybe 2 1/2' to 3" long for skinning with a handle a little
longer

Rex;
I don't have one on hand at the moment to measure, but it is about as thick as most pocket knives in the trapper style..about what I like for skinning..
