Prohunter FTF

Got a new prohunter stainless thumbhole stocked rifle in 25-06.  Went to the range for the first time and was shooting some remington factory ammo.  Fired 5 or 6 shots and next one failed to fire (FTF).  Checked and the hammer screw (the one that lets you twist the hammer spur to the side) I tightend it still FTF after several attempts.  The primer was dented.  Next shell FTF, tightend the screw again and it felt tight still FTF.  Switched to Federal factory ammo and fired 7 in a row no problem.  I have heard of similar issues with prohunters and remington ammo.  Don't know if the primers are too hard or just bad.  No more green boxes for me.

It is not the gun, if the primer is dented and did not go off, the primer is most likely the culprit.

That would depend on how much it's dented.  If it's a nice deep dent, then the primer is the culprit.  If it's a shallow dent then it could be the primer or a weak spring in the gun.

I would find it hard to believe the problem to be a weak hammer spring.
The hammer spring on my PH is quite a lot stronger than on my other Encores!

Take the barrel off and drop a round into the chamber.  Is the cartridge flush with the end of barrel or sitting down in the chamber a little?

Sounds like a headspace issue to me with a deep chamber and cases sized at the factory to short side of the spec.  Only takes a few .001's to create this situation.

Bill In SC, if it was a headspace issue, I think it would happen all the time.  JMHO.

Primers were dented enough I would think to have gone off.  You would think the headspace would be the same on new brass.

It could very well just be a primer issue...  However, I have measured some Factory ammunition and they were all over the board for length.  This is measuring them to a datum point on the shoulder, not OAL using a Stoney Point gauge.

If the chamber is cut to max spec's, and the cases are sized to minimum specs, adding in any gap between the barrel and frame, you can get the situation that Neuton has come upon.  Remember we are talking measurments in .001.  Not very big   :)

I have seen it happen two different times.  One brand of factory would shoot like a champ with no FTF's and the other would be a hit or miss situation.

Again... Just a thought.

Sounds to me like a headspace problem, but only way to know for sure is to measure it.

Encores are famous for light hammer strikes.  Mine worked great with the .50 M/L barrel.  The very first time i had the .30-06 barrel on it-misfire.  Took the hammer extension off and it worked fine.  i had been told by other Encore owners that this would probably happen-especially with Remington ammo.  Apparently Remington primers are a little harder than some others.   Since this happened i have installed an extra strength hammer spring, re-installed the hammer extension and everything is fine.
